Hi all,

So I wanted a slightly smaller plate and following advice I bought a 6” x 4” plate... it’s arrived and it just looks bloody stupid!

What do you all use to avoid getting pulled and fined every weekend? 7x5 or 8x6??

I bought the smallest most legal one I could.
Ie. Full sized letters on the smallest plate.

I've used 8x6 for quite a number of years and never had a problem.

8x6 you’ll never get any issues despite technically being illegal.
I’ve run 7x5 on various bikes for years with zero issues except for MOT time

Cheers guys, I think I’ll order 8x6.

I should have thought about sizing more but 6x4 is literally a tad taller than my iPhone!

I have run with 8 x 6 plates on my bikes for many years now.

That much bit smaller than a full-size plate so they look ok, but not so small as to fear getting pulled.

I think running with a tiny plate just gives plod a reason to pull you and potentially start looking into other stuff...

Been running 8 x 6 on all bikes for over 10 years ,no issue. Been pulled an chatted to about speed, also done my RoSPA test twice, with no comments on the plate smile

I've been pulled once while I had a 7x5 plate on, either had a good guy or someone not interested in paperwork as it wasn't mentioned.
Probably did 15k miles with 7x5's and no bother.

8x6 for me too, the letters are 2mm smaller than legal.

I run really small bendy ones on dirt bikes - full size ones look utterly ridiculous on them

I've ran 7x5 plates for about 15 years and never had any problem.

I've just this minute ordered another one for my new bike now that santa has delivered the tail tidy for it.

Hi, there have been a number of threads on this which I found really useful.
It’s worth reading DVLA vehicle registration and number plates INF104. (.gov.uk website)You can work out how small you can go legally depending on the age of your bike and the type or registration you’ve got. I bought a five digit plate and you can get pretty small and stay legal.
The second thing is finding somewhere who will make it and is registered so you get all the correct info on the plate (supplier postcode, BS 145 whatever version it’s on now)
I used a very helpful company called JDMplates who started off doing plates for Japanese import cars but also do motorbike plates.
So I’ve got a 7” x 6.5” fully legal plate, could have gone smaller but the proportions would have been odd.
Or you can just buy a “show plate” and get whatever you want smile

I got pulled last summer for a 7x5.
Got away with a telling off and a promise I'd put a legal plate on.
Now got an 8x6 on which is slightly less illegal I guess.

Like many, I've been using 8x6 plates for many years and have never had an issue.
