Anyone following this year's Dakar race.
Still quite a close competition for both bikes and cars.
Sadly 1 bike rider fatality on stage 7.
I was following Mick Extance but it looks like he has aborted although cant find any details about why. Hopefully he is ok and it was a minor spill or mechanical problem.

I think mick extance is still going, he had a tyre which he had to cut off and rode 100km on the rim to finish the stage. I think he’s no longer in the standings but still in it as far as I understand. Still quite a close competition for both bikes and cars.

Cheers that's great news. When he disappeared from the rankings I assumed he was out and couldnt find any recent info online. It's an amazing story that he's in it given his health scares so would be great if he gets to the end.Brads67 said:
Coverage is garbage this year as is the location.
No crowds, Woman are probably not allowed to watch anyway, medieval tip.
Watch the Dakar every year but am giving it a miss this year.
Bring back Peru, that's a great location.
Let me see, ladies are now allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia, ladies can now also work (the majority of the immigration offices at the airports are ladies)...No crowds, Woman are probably not allowed to watch anyway, medieval tip.

Not sure how many spectators you expect to see in the desert.
Yes Saudi Arabia wasn't the most socially advanced country, but giant steps have been taken and continue to be taken with the current king.
How do I know? I have visiting and working in Saudi Arabia for the last 14 years.
Fully agree on the location, the opening ceremony seemed to be very careful about not showing the 30 people who turned up, rather then the thousands who turned up for the south american opening ceremony.
if you wanna see something decent, look at Lyndon Poskitt's You Tube channel, he is current doing the Africa eco race, and doing daily episodes including the build up to the race, well worth watching!

my series link playing up but I have caught most of this. Just a shame the eurosport coverage is so s
t
Eurosport on provide the voice over, the rest of the coverage can normally be found on the dakars you tube channel in individual videos (cars, trucks, bikes as separate you tube videos)
t have been annoyed to find myself recording the snooker rather than the dakar though
Unfortunately, it looks like Sam Sunderland is out with five broken vertebrae and a broken shoulder blade
After his historic win last year, I'd argue that Sunderland should have been in the New Year's honours list. Although if Lewis Hamilton's been omitted from the Queen's Birthday and New Year's honours lists, how much chance has the first British Dakar winner got?
Winning the Dakar has got to be as difficult as winning an Olympic Gold (and far tougher / more dangerous too).

I think a lot of people just don't get the danger part enough for bikers, I read Charley Boorman's book about his attempt at the Dakar, although I think the bloke is a complete bellend, his accounts of how the trucks come charging past and bikers have to get out their way, the trucks don't even try to avoid the bikers.

Yeah, shame. He was riding well. His hospital bed tweet seemed pretty chipper given the massive crash he'd had.
He won in 2018 didn't he? Toby Price won last year with his f
ked wrist.Think Ricky Brabec is nailed on for this year barring any mishaps. He will be a deserved winner.
Frankly, all the riders are legends and hard as nails.

The country might be a bit questionable but the location is proper Dakar like the original, the fans might have been great in South America but it didn’t look as good as this
