for reasons unknown to me my ageing R1 is a bit of a git to shift up under full throttle on track. Most noticeable from 2nd to 3rd sometimes failing to shift and have to give it another go. Seems to need a lot of upward pressure to get it to go into next gear. Less so 3rd to 4th. So far I tend not to go down to 1st while on track so can't comment on 1st to 2nd. It doesn't jump out of gear

seems fine on road but then I'm not riding with the throttle pinned.

linkage moves fine and isn't sticky

chain and sprockets are relatively new and in good adjustment/condition

could be me but my RSV and GSXR750 before it both had lovely slick gearboxes without issue

any thoughts?

no QS

just old skool apply pressure up to shift lever and flick the throttle off/on quickly. Without clutch

Early R1 had a gearbox made of Chinesium. The softest metal know to man. jester
I would say an 02 with a fair few trackdays on it would be ready for some new selector forks and Barrel.

new bike you say?

thought someone would say something expensive sounding

i've only had it on track a handful of times - no idea of it's previous life. No obvious indications it was a track slag. (Apart from the gearbox maybe)

I’ve had 5 x 98 R1s, one of which covered 98,000 miles in all weathers, 5/6 days per week, vomiting into London west end, this bike must have had more up / down shifts than I’ve had hot dinners. None of the 5 bikes suffered from any gear box problems. The gear boxes only play up if the bike has been abused, by repeated wheelies and banging it into gear.
