Mrs E.L. and I are finally thinking about doing what we've talked about for ages now, save up a sh*t load of money and do one of these self-guided motorbike tours of New Zealand next year.

Anyone done this ? Got any experience of any of the companies that do these ? Any advice ?

A good mate of mine did it a few years back. I think they used VFR New Zealand and they had an absolutely great time. It was a few years ago though. I’ll message him with any questions you’ve got.

Mate of mine used these.

Said it was well organised, good support (he had a problem with bike during trip & they dropped a replacement bike to him). He did the basic motels 16 day tour version of both North & South islands. Used their F700GS with Garmin supplied & preprogrammed routes for each day from motel to motel. Said roads/scenery were fantastic.

NZ speed limits are low and heavily enforced, so it's probably not worth paying the extra for the fastest bikes. Have a great trip!

That's why my mate picked the F700, said it was ideal for what he was doing.

I’ve only been here six months but my experience so far is that there are some amazing roads. Yes I’ve seen cameras and police but only on the main roads. The quiet country roads that are great fun to ride don’t seem to be policed (it’s a huge country with not that many people) and anyway, the best roads I’ve found you would struggle to get much above 100 kmh owing to the number of corners. That said I only know the roads near Auckland so can’t speak for the whole country (yet!)
