I’m looking to buy a set for the Diavel to use on a Euro trip in the summer, in the past on other bikes it’s been a tankbag and rucksack, but I like the idea of not carrying a rucksack and being able to leave luggage on the bike fairly securely.
Shad do a system and offer either 23 or 36 litre panniers, the 36l are 33cm wide, while the 23l are 27cm, am I likely to notice the extra width of the wider panniers?
Thanks

You will notice the extra width of panniers, even if you go for the smaller ones. That said the only way to see if there is a noticable difference in width of the two options is to see them on a bike. Are there any other bikes you can look at with the panniers fitted?

I tend to mock these things up to see it - ie make similar in cardboard and tape it on

I bought 27litre aluminium panniers and they are 20cm wide. Using Givi pannier racks they have been just under the width of the handlebars on the 2 bikes I have fitted them to.
You do notice them at times but you can still filter. You can probably get a helmet in the 36 litre.

If you are solo i would prefer top box and remaining gear strapped to back seat, usually have a kirega us30 and camping gear strapped on pillion seat using a decent sized top box as support.

When off camping i have stuff across the back seat and it’s all a max of 60cm wide.
I have a Ventura bag so it’s piled high but I know that filtering is no problem.
A few years ago I had panniers wider than my brain realised and I must admit to bouncing off a few things on the road.
