Passed my DAS before Xmas and looking to get a 17-19 Street Triple R. Seen a Triumph Approved used 2 year old one with 7k Miles that I like with the options on it I want for £7,500. However just been rung up by another dealer I’ve been talking to who have a cancelled order one for £8,500. They’ll fit all the options I want (parts alone come to £675 and then there’s labour on top) for £500 so I’m getting a brand new, optioned up, bike for £1,500 more than the second hand one.
Insurance will cost me a bit more, but I’m leaning toward the new one.
However, I’m well aware that there are many good reasons to get the older one. At risk of the abuse and eye rolls I might get on here, I’m seeking views on which way to turn.
Anyone bought a second hand one and wished they’d bought new? Or bought new and felt they’d wasted their money?

I'd definitely get the new one at the last price. Especially considering the extra warranty and the fact that you'll know how it's been run in etc.

A good question. Probably spend it on crap to make myself feel better that I didn’t get the brand new one.

Depends on the deal and T&Cs doesnt it. Sometimes you can get a 0% deal on a new bike or free/discounted insurance, which if you need to finance your purchase, can make a new bike cheaper Vs a new-ish SH bike. Man maths can make it slightly more complicated thou!

Go for new if you can. I went with a demo bike for my last bike. But I’m going HP. It had 90 miles on it and I put 44 of those on it, but if the saving weren’t so big I would have gone with new.

Is it the new Street Triple R ie just launched or a 2019 bike? I don’t think it changed massively for 2020 but there were some improvements. I’d definitely go new if it were a 2020 bike.

I was in a similar situation, used XSR was £5000, new was available for £6500. Went with the latter, for £1500 it seemed a no brainer, I don't need anything else desperately and it's a bit of a treat to have a brand new vehicle (for me at least)

It’s the 2019 model. But it’s the R, for which the 2020 model is a bit of a downgrade.

I bought brand new when I passed despite lots telling me to go used for my first bike, do I regret it? Not one bit, icing on the cake to the start of biking life for me.

The only thing that'd put me off is worrying about keeping a new bike mint (you'll inevitably drop it, like almost everyone does)

But the golden rule is but what you fancy smile

Go with your heart.

Any other thought, check same model on the second hand classifieds from private sellers. Some want the same as dealers and are dreamers but if you have cash it is usually a buyers market and a low offer of 1k less or you walk away is often accepted.

It might not matter to you but for information a Triumph dealer offered me £6,600 for a 4K mile 765rs which when new just 18 months before listed at £11.5k with the options.

I didn’t of course go with it and did much better in a private sale but that was their walk away price, which I did.

I can only assume that’s how they do business with used bikes so it’s useful to know the margins they are working off.

New bike sounds like a no brainer.

But.
I see you've not long since passed your DAS? What is your current riding kit like?

If you just bought cheap 'that will do' kit you could possibly buy the 2and hand bike and make yourself feel better by spending that £1500 on some nice riding gear maybe?

Haven’t skimped on kit. I’m too old and (supposedly) sensible not to go out and get decent kit. I’m probably the epitome of ‘all the gear and no idea’ to be honest.

If resources allow why would you buy second hand compared to new?

In your case - buy new, unless you are like me

I bought a rough dirt bike, sick of fixing it every ride, I bought a mint road bike, I'm now regretting it because it means I have to clean it all the time and will be pissed off when I inevitably slide it down the road, I should have bought a rougher one.

The only reason not to buy new in this situation would be if you are the sort of person that changes their vehicle regularly. If that's the case you may find you lose out financially.

Otherwise the warranty and knowing how well the bike was run in etc trumps the £1500 saving for me.
