I fancied something a bit different for bimbling to a brewery on a sunny evening here in Denver, that wasn't going to lose a stload of money in a short space of time. So like any sensible person I bought an old Ducati...

Its a 2006 non-S 999 biposto. You rarely see them in the gloss black and so far its quite enjoyable in the canyons of Colorado. There is very little accommodation for street riding in these but once you're ringing its neck, its a delight. Obviously I plan to fit a termi system so that literally EVERYONE sees me arrive at the cafe...
In other news, my local Ducati independent mechanic has a whole bunch of old race bikes in it, awaiting various levels f restoration for local tracks days. The workshop includes ex Carl Fogarty and Ruben Xaus bikes, which was a surprise. WSBK is the bigger series here, among enthusiasts.

congrats...lovely bike...I bought one, a 2005 Biposto, last summer...I'm loving it. Compared to modern bikes it's not easy to ride, and I have compared!

Probably will go with all black erry-thaaanng. Mercifully it came with the original orange indicator lenses which I plan to reinstate immediately.

Why bother with "non-S"? Do you also refer to Terminator 1 etc?

I never really understand what people see in older Ducatis, that's probably why I really like the looks the 999 and 749.

Great looking thing. Suits the black as well. Good choice.

I think it looks great. Even with the non-orange indicators.. I'd be happy with that just as it is. smile

749 / 999 bikes seem really good value at the moment.

I've recently bought a 748 but would love to try one of the later models at some point (although I hated the 848)

I was originally looking for an 848 as I love the look of them. But in the flesh I found them a bit soulless. The 999 could be the last proper Ducati (read: a bit crap). Honestly I was riding the thing thinking "Honda wouldn't even build a pre-prodcution bike this shoddy." The system for holding those wing mirrors on is woeful and the right one flops around like a mop in a bucket. But once moving, it doesn't move at all biggrin And ripping through a canyon at 6k rpm plus, its a dream and there is character in its flaws, it just woudn't feel the same on anything else. For circa 120hp its properly fast if you rinse it. I also had a feeling in my loins that there is a slight groundswell of retrospective fondness for these which they weren't afforded when they were new. That makes me think it might not lose much money and maybe even gain a bit if I sink some into it.

The 05 and 06 999 had the same cams as the 999S. 138hp at the crank. If it doesn't already, get a different exhaust onto it - even a slip-on like the Termignoni, Leo Vince or Spark asymmetric system.

Are they real forged aluminium wheels or just the stickers?

Ahhh ok. I have been scouring for a Leo Vince but they’re like rocking horse st. There are 57mm termi systems around, a full system seems to be anything from 900-1700 US$. But I’m in Denver so I have to factor like a 10hp drop from lack of oxygen or some bloody thing. Basically chasing hp here is kind of pointless. Chasing a nice sound however is absolutely legitimate.

My understanding on the wheels is that they are Marchesinis but not necessarily the forged variety, which I think were only on the S and R. But I’m not sure. More research needed.

Looking at this yesterday, the front is stickered as a Marchesini Forged and the rear just as Marchesini. Is there any way to tell if the stickering is accurate?

Weighing them will settle it for sure! I was reading something the other day about forgies having laser etched part numbers or something, but then my 999R has forged ally wheels and I haven't seen any laser etched data on them anywhere. There's probably variations somewhere in the shapes of things. There are two different spoke designs across the years but how they go I don't know. They are a variant of the Machesini M10 Kompe.
