Is it possible to tell from the VIN plate whether that particular bike is at risk??

Apparently not, and some of the engines from the same time are fine and some are not
As far as I know, it only affected a few of the first runs of the engine, which will all be circa 5 years old now, so if there was a problem, chances are they'd have surfaced by now

some good youtube videos from "the workshop" he is a marmite character but is an engineer and took a look at the crank failures. Well worth watching.

Cheers chaps,

Friend has one which was a National racers spare bike so used as spares and emergency back up. Only has 3000kms on after it was sold to the 2nd owner and then my mate.
He's naturally worried about this issue but from what I understand Yamaha fitted the crank thrust shims from the 2016 manufacturer year so anything prior is at risk....
Cause is well understood but is there a simple before and after date such as being manufactured in 2016??

The engine number would be the obvious one, but you would need to know the engine number from when they added the shims.
