Hi all,

I’ve been using my bike to and from work and have got 6000 miles out of the rear Michelin Pilot Road 2 and there’s still a lot of life left but they’re now a bit square.

I’m getting the bike serviced next week and thought before the lockdown gets worse I’ll chuck a set of new tyres on.

Decided to go with the Bridgestone S22’s but already thinking I’ve made the wrong choice!

Realistically, vast majority of miles are on the motorway, do you think 5000 miles is possible from an S22?

Also, what’s the best way to scrub them in and for how long?

Yes you should get 5k, as for scrubbing in just ride it normally and don't push for the first 10 miles, I'm happy using all the tyre after that distance.

You would almost certainly be better off with a Pilot Road 4 or 5.

I’ve heard of people getting 8k out Road 2 so if you only got 6 I think you’ll struggle to get 5 out of a S22.

Yup, that's all they need as far as I'm concerned, the first mile is always slow and careful but then I just ride down one of my local twisty roads for 10 miles progressively leaning further once the tyre warms up, job done, there's so much bks talked about new tyres and 'scrubbing in' and you always get the nasal types going 'well you must add 5 degrees more lean every 50 miles and don't exceed 37degrees until the tire has done 244 miles'
It's simply not necessary with modern tyres.

There is probably another 2000 miles in the rear and a few more in the front but decided to change them not just in case I can’t get tyres in a months time!

What didn’t help the Road 2’s was I’d advised to run lower pressures so they probably wouldn’t have squared off as much had I of run normal pressures!

Absolutely agree. Doesn't even take 10 miles in the summer.

No, I had them fitted in September for a 3000 mile Spain trip. They did not make it back

No. I would describe it as a spirited road trip just short of 3000 miles. Four bikes 3 S1000RR's and a fireblade. Tyres Metzler Road Tec RR, Michelin Power Rs, bridgestone Rs 10 and the Bridgestone 22. After 1500 miles the metzler and Bridgestone 10 were changed. After 2000 miles funnily enough the front michelin was changed as it became unridable the rear got all the way home and then some. The 22 was pulled in the services just outside Plymouth by a very reasonable police officer who pointed out it was worn out, that was a bit of an understatement, when we discussed the fact it was only going to do about another 150 miles he kindly let us get on our way. What would really concern me is the fact this year the weather was really bad, cold and very wet so our spirited moments were somewhat curtailed otherwise I think you would have been looking at something between 2000 and 2500.

1500 miles!? That’s ridiculous!? I can do that in a month!

I think I should have gone with the Road 5’s but fancied something a tad more sporty!

They’re going on a GSXR 750 being ridden by an absolute novice so it’s not like I’m leaving black lines out of every corner!

Well we’ll see, I’ll reset the 2nd trip and update this!

The actual tyre was very good more than held it's own with the other brands. Your idea is good put a pair on, and measure the mileage. They will react differently to different bikes and riders. I used to have supercorsa on mine and sometimes got 2000 miles out of a rear. After being told they would only do 3 yards. I don't wish to be rude but if you are just bimbling about at this stage save yourself some money and put a recognised sports tourer/ tourer on

No offence taken, I’m not just pottering around, but I’m not chucking 200bhp through it either! I’ve had the Pilot Road 2 spin up a few times! I’m wanting a trye that will fall on its side easier. Reviews state the front S22 is very flickable so I’m looking forward to them!

They will handle anything the road has to throw at them. 44 teeth on youtube do a selection of sports bikes on them at The official launch at Jerez I think. It gives a good impression of what they will do. Obviously take into account they are there to big the tyre up. I bought Power RS on the blurb and a right pile of sh@×te that original tyre turned out to be. The ZX10 doesn't like them though!

44teeth were one of the reasons I went with them. I appreciate they’re sponsored by Bridgestone but they use the S22’s on everything which gives me confidence that they’re a decent tyre. They also did their euro trio in all weathers on s21’s I think and the 22’s are meant to be better in every way.

We’ll see, if I only get a few thousand out of a rear I’ll chuck another one on to see me through the summer and then maybe try Road 5’s over the winter 👍🏼👍🏼

That's interesting: I really liked the original Power RS. Thought they handled my Tuono V2 power very well, and was very happy leaning them right over if it was dry. If it was damp, I was still reasonably satisfied. If it was wet, I stayed at home.

In terms of wear, the front was still usable after 7000 miles, and I got 4500 out of the first rear. I wasn't the fastest rider in the world by any standards but I didn't tend to hold people up either (anymore).

If I was to buy another tyre now, it would probably be a Road 5. Still more than enough grip for me (and I reckon, for most) and should last a good deal longer.

I agree with you, the Road 5 will still do things I don’t have the skill to make it do but I’ve got to be honest, the confidence I have in these s22’s is just unreal! I’m leaning further and further but it just keeps wanting more speed!

I had the suspension setup this week and that’s made a huge difference!

I dont think I have ever managed more than 6k out of a rear Road 5 tbh.

Between 5 and 6k on the ZZR, but that was commuting, mostly motorway miles and possibly running them longer than was sensible...

Yep I put fresh ones on, get to the right pressure and set off. First few miles warm them up not leaning much, after 10 or so miles start leaning with the first time on each side at 40+ degrees smooth. Then thats it - done
