Had a little bit of time on my hands recently.... so I’ve been looking at new bikes as you do smile

Having got a specific track bike now and the 60th R1 has gone, I’ve only got a street triple in the garage for road use, it’s a fun bike but I’ve had a few 675/765 triumphs now and fancy a change.

I’d been looking at the 1290SDR but as much as I loved my test ride on it I’m not really a twin fan.
So that’s led me to the MT, it seems to tick all the boxes and they look quite good vfm even if they are made to a budget.

They seem to get pretty good write ups and reviews, what do you guys and girls that own them think?
Is there much difference between the model years? Electronics the same across the range/model years? Is the SP worth the extra? What are the differences?

Usually I’d be at a dealers now but that’s looking like it’s going to happen anytime soon so any info greatly received smile

And pictures too

No where near the grunt of the superduke R and not as nicely made, good fun bikes though.

I owned one for a couple of years, great fun bike. Great for the road. Can carry luggage easily if you want to tour and for a naked you can cruise easily at “motorway” speeds.
I’d get the standard and get a decent shock and fork internals as I found the suspension a bit crap.
I remapped mine by Junction 33 in lancs and it it was a lot smoother, the throttle can be quite snatchy.
There’s no difference between all model years as far as I can tell, on and change the pads for Brembo road and race made them loads better.
Easy to decat but can be loud if a cheap link pipe is used.

What is it about twins you don’t like?

I ask because the cross plane engine has many characteristics of a twin, and arguably a snatcher throttle than a SDR.

I never actually found the throttle on the R1 that bad, and the MT is meant to be fractionally better from what I’ve heard.

I like to rev a bike, when riding the SDR it was great, made me laugh as the massive thump of torque was bonkers but to ME I think the novelty would wear off after a while.

Im hoping the MT has a nice amount of torque but still has a revvy top end

I went for the MT10 after riding most of the super nakeds. The MT10 is about half the price for me to insure, bizarrely even at 26 with a fair amount of no claims, quotes for the SDR, S1000r etc were in the £1k region. The MT10 is a great bike, and plenty quick enough for the road. I had mine mapped to 155.3hp at the wheel, its much smoother and actually does about 3mpg more when being sensible. They might not be the fastest bikes of the bunch but they're so much fun, the short wheel base means power wheelies can be had in 4th, and they sound insane with a decat. Lots of parts are available from the R1 too (Ti Headers, rear sets, Brembo radial master etc) and can be had relatively cheap from the facebook groups

I was surprised with the insurance too, under half what the duke is for me.

I know that statement is literally true, and this isn't aimed at you specifically, but it seems so bizarre to hear anyone talk almost apologetically of a 155bhp naked bike.

I mean. fking hell, the early R1s were about that output weren't they?

It’s very bizarre, it’s been mentioned in a few reviews, I’ve not ridden one yet but it’s not going to be slow is it!

It’s like the speed rs, I’ve ridden one quite a bit as it’s the loan bike when I’ve had my street serviced, yeah it’s definitely not like the SDR or s1000r that I’ve ridden but you certainly wouldn’t call it slow.

I guess now we’ve got a couple of nakeds circa 200hp, 150-160 is going to be looked down upon very soon.

I mean if we’re perfectly honest my 100hp Street though lacking the torque is still a quick bike for the roads.

I think they are the benchmark of the Jap stuff as 'Super Naked'. Upto 80-90mph there is little in one of those vs a Tuono, SDR etc (if you can keep the front wheel down)

Also interested in real world wind protection, are they that much better than anything else?

Haha, I know what you're saying. On track they do seem to lose out to the competition at 100+. If you're not going to track it and only ride it on the road it wont matter thumbup

The MT10 is much better after a decat and flash (got mine done at Dynoworx in Livingston), throttle connection is nicer with the flash, you do need to watch out for what decat pipe and can as it can be LOUD, not too bad with earplugs, but without gets tiring after a while, the standard bike is great for vast majority of riders and does everything most people want from a bike, in over 25 years riding bikes its one of the best and i have ridden a few bikes and the 10 ranks among the most fun and value for money, the SP in my opinion isnt worth the extra money. Plenty torque and quick enough for some good fun and comfortable with the comfort seat option.

I try to post here a lot but usually find i cant, keep getting a message saying the forum is subject to abuse so i cant post, is that normal?

I have been considering one of these or a Katana at some point in the future. I am leaning towards the Katana but won't rule the MT-10 out until I've tried one.

I'm getting one of these next year, the Z1000SX is great but boring in comparison.

If you do this the wind protection is better.
