Hi all,

Newbie biker question...

Have a new helmet coming, comes with 1 clear visor, 1 dark visor and 1 pinlock insert.

Would you bother with a pinlock insert in the dark visor?

Yes always, I have pinlocks fitted to both clear and dark visors always.

You can also get a dark pinlock for a clear visor which saves the need for a dark visor.

Or better still a transitions visor.

are they much use though? everybody iv asked about the transitions visor has told me not to bother as they take too long to change.

I like the idea of the transition visor but I couldn’t find one for my Nolan N87 (not an issue as it has the internal flip down visor but I’m not a fan of it) and I’ve not found one for the X Lite 803 RS that I’ve bought.

The X Lite will be a summer helmet so will have the dark visor on unless I go out of a summers evening so I’ll buy another pinlock for the clear visor so at least it’s there when I need it.

Thanks all.

You don't want a transitions pinlock because a lot of visors have UV protection which stops it working.

A full transitions visor is however very good. I have a Shoei one too which I find excellent. Between taking it out of its bag and walking to the bike, which isn't far its dark enough on a sunny day before I've started the bike.

It obviously doesn't go clear through dappled trees very quickly but its good enough and better than an unchanging dark tint.

They are the dogs bks as Toxic states, the change is a matter of seconds, yes you have to be careful when going thru tunnels. I had the visor half in the sunlight and it was half tint, half clear!

I prefer my dark tint visor during the day but it's horrible if I return home later than expected. So my default is the clear visor and photochromic pinlock. The dark tint is when I am absolutely sure that I won't be riding home at dusk.

I have a far visor for the summer days, but if there is any doubt about it getting dark a transitions visor is used.

It really is very good. Just pricey!

Where did you buy it from? I can’t find one for my Nolan N87 or X Lite 803 RS.

Had a look around, seems like you can’t get one for your models of helmet. I have a couple of Shoei X-Spirit 3’s.

Closest thing you can probably do is to fit a transitions pinlock if they do one.

Did Pinlock take over from Fog City ?

And you still need to drill the visor ?

(I may well be hugely behind the times)

Only if the helmet doesn’t come with a native pinlock. Most do now.

Ah ok...

I remember them first coming out and how we laughed as they told us to drill our £45 Visors...

But then, I also said R&G ould never catch on :shrugs:
