I've been eyeing out motors to replace my supermoto's motor. Having never been through this before, it seems a simple job of filling out a V5 form if you do change the motor (https://www.gov.uk/change-vehicle-details-registration-certificate/what-evidence-to-give). I guess the question is does an ebay receipt count as an invoice?

There is a very good looking LC8 motor on ebay, but the alarm bells are ringing with "no engine numbers" due to being a "bat (sic) B bike". Initially I completely wrote this off, but a low miles clean motor out of a crashed or damaged bike written off due to insurance is kind of exactly what I'm looking for. There seems to be conflicting info about Cat B requiring the frame only to be destroyed, but some stuff online seems to suggest sometimes the motor also has its engine numbers removed. Thats a bit odd, as even as a track bike some places will require engine/frame numbers visible.

So, whats the deal here? Should a CAT B bike have an engine number? If not, is it okay to transplant? What would be updated with the DVLA if no engine number is present?

First and foremost I don't want a stolen motor, both contributing to the problem and dealing with the potential hassles.

And as an aside, anyone know a good source for KTM motors?

I'm not an expert on KTMs but I'd be very surprised if each engine they produce didn't have a number. I expect it's out of a stolen bike and they have attempted to file the number off.

Very suspicious. I'd think it's stolen. Why would an insurance company go to the trouble of grinding off an engine number?
