A PHer had one I think for commuting into Exeter. He said he was going to cut an inch or so off the bar ends to make it narrower for filtering.

I reckon those Dukes are pretty much the same with the main difference being the engine. If you're attracted to it to because of the physical size, the 390 is the same size but with about 18 more bhp.

I reckon a UK one will be the earlier model without the updates mentioned in that video.

I presume it's attractive because they're filthy cheap, being a 200 most folk with a proper licence won't go anywhere near it, but it's too much for CBTers obviously.

But at 26hp it probably goes alright, I'm sure it'll crack 70 quite happily.

You'll have more main road go on a 390.

There are five from about £2,600 on Autotrader, for not much more you can get a 2017 model year 390. I think the 2017 390 may be about a cm taller in the seat.

If it's about physical size check out the Z650. It doesn't seem as tall as the Dukes to me and seems dinkier.

Ah that's a bit more than I thought - last time I looked at them there were a couple up for about £1500 on eBay which didn't look in bad nick.

I saw one advertised in late 2017 with Fowlers for around £2200 with half a dozen nice options on it.

I tested a 390 when I was looking for a first road bike - it's really quite slow.

I bought the 690 - still a small, light (150kg) bike but really quite nippy 0-60 3.3

The OP has an issue wheeling a bike backwards uphill into a garage and has previously dropped a bike and that's dented their confidence. I can appreciate the OP's predicament as I've two inclines going in different directions to deal with when getting into and out of a garage.

I reckon the OP was looking at a Duke 200 due to the physical size. If that's why they were looking at a 200, the 390 is the same size.

I am not sure if the 690 Duke I've ridden was lowered but the stretch to the ground caused me some hip discomfort. I can comfortably flat foot a 390 both sides. Size wise the 690 Duke may be comparable to the bike the OP dropped.

That's why I mentioned the Z650. When last out I saw a lovely dark blue coloured MT-07 but from memory they don't seem as small as the Z650.

If the OP has confidence issues they'll be there regardless of the size of bike or what adverts they see on eBay. Previous threads on this issue have directed the OP at videos on YouTube on how to get comfortable wheeling your motorcycle around. I've found those videos useful myself.

The lockdown has probably got in the way with regard to getting out and having extra work, but I think until the OP gets back into the saddle and get some more confidence and experience the same issues may well remain.

If the OP has confidence issues and needs to get out there and get their experience and skills level up then they'll be doing them at slower, and hopefully safer, speeds on a 200 than a 390. If they can wheel a Duke 200 into their garage they can wheel a Duke 390 into their garage.

I've not ridden a Z650 but when I've been stood next to one they seem small and un-threatening. Previous threads have covered the OP's desire to have a larger CC, more 'impressive' motorcycle for the sake of appearances hence why I mentioned the Z650. It ticks the small, manageable size box and the supposed 'other bikers don't take you seriously if you don't have a 600 or larger' box.

I reckon it could well be the case that if the OP approaches the right motorcycle trainer, explains their issues with confidence moving a bike around and perhaps does the moving the bike around exercises on their own drive way it will be like a light switching on.

It's a shame, but if the OP can get their confidence issues properly addressed they'll get more from being on a motorcycle and conquering those doubts and getting over dropping their bike previously may well make them more confident and happier about themselves in general and that will lead to benefits in other areas of their life.

I could buy a Z900, a Duke 790 or a air cooled Ducati 1100S Hypermotard, but at the end of the day I'll still be just me with the same characteristics, same defects and same traits. The stretch to the ground on a Ducati Hypermotard may give me hip pain and make my riding look even more crap and wussy.

My mrs has a 390 and I was looking at the husky 401’s as a first bike. Glad I didn’t go beyond initial enquiry (none in country) as I find hers slow and the riding position cramped and far too upright.

I know but (from google) the 200 is only 16kg lighter than the 690

If he wants something light and that he can keep dropping, enduro bikes eg WR250, WR450 etc are all around 100kg so 30 odd lighter than the 200 and a lot more fun !

I agree with your second sentence. Having something dropable and pick up able would be a good idea.

I checked MCN for the Duke 690 weight and they said they're a doddle to ride. On a short Duke 690 ride I took a couple liberties due to how confidence inducing it felt. They're about the same weight as the 2017 model year Duke 390. I didn't know that.

Interesting benchmark for weight in the second four star rated category:

Very, very, very popular in South East Asia. I used to live in the Philippines and rode with the local KTM group (me on a SuperDuke, most of them on 200s and 390s). They are good bikes. Generally pretty reliable, but I have a personal friend who suffered engine seizure despite it being a garage queen. I think among the best power out put in the 200 class (which isn't common here I appreciate).

Slightly off topic and possibly a silly suggestion but if you are going to continue to reverse up a slope to your garage have you considered a electric winch in the garage?
If you don't put weight on the bike bobbins should be strong enough to pull from? May free up bike choices until your confidence grows.
Anyone feel free to point potential for catastrophe. smile
