Been using an alarmed Abus for 5 years now, its a security requirement on one of my bikes so just carry it under the seat, they do multiple versions to fit various disc sizes

Saves me posting the link, that's the one.

Go for one of the insurance approved makes, Abus, Xena, Oxford are all good makes but not all their products are approved so check. I think the UK approved phrase is 'Sold Secure' but perhaps somebody will confirm, in France it is SRA. Get the thickest pin that will go through the holes in your disc and make sure that there is sufficient depth in the throat of the lock to allow the disc far enough in for the pin to reach the hole easily. Avoid the hoards of cheapo locks which can be forced with a screwdriver or picked in seconds. I use a shackle lock which is said to be much more secure, it is a stainless Xena lock with a 20mm thick shackle, with a chain you can attach your bike to a lamp post or railings for added security.

I like the shackle type - used alone when out and about and with a chain when at home / somewhere dodgy.

+1 for these Abus disc locks (more reliable than Xena, IME).

Could the new Lite Lock Moto be work a look too? Lighter than a chain, yet Sold Secure Gold.

I've got a Xena XX10, one of these: https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/...

It's bloody loud and easy to set off by mistake. The internals must be reasonably durable as I've dropped it on concrete once or twice and it's still bloody loud. Bike not stolen yet, YMMV etc.

5/5 stars would deafen myself again I guess? I wish the arming beep were a little quieter.

I have Abus 8077
https://www.amazon.co.uk/ABUS-8077-2-Lock-Motorcyc...

Used to have an Abus 7000 mentioned above, never had any problems with the 7000 but the 8077 is more secure but also heavier and a little awkward to use.
The 8077 has a 19mm pin that may not fit smaller bikes, the 10mm pin on the 7000 should fit any disc.

I use an Abus granite sledg 77, so no alarm, not high on my requirement list, but a very solid lump of metal and small enough to fit under the seat or even in a pocket at a push. Was around £70 to £80 when I got it now nearer £100

I use the Oxford Screamer I think it’s called. Small enough to fit under the rear seat cover, loud enough to hopefully alert me if anyone touches it.

I bought the 8008 after reading this article.

It's the weight of a brick but it'll take some getting through!

Aren't the massive ones a waste of time because they'll just cut the disk off? Why tackle a huge 16mm shackle when you can nip a section out of the disk?

They really just stop someone pushing it away...if the scrotes are in a van, they just pick it up anyway. Disc locks are just deterrents to keep insurance companies happy really, something is fitted better than the steering lock....

Had my R1 knicked like that. Disc lock and alarmed, and just thrown I to a van - in front of the NHS hospital security fellas - apparently it was " not our job to stop them"

I have had the equivalent of the ABUS 37/60HB70 for about 15 years. It's easy to use, reliable and my bikes haven't been stolen, even in London. Having said which I haven't owned anything particularly desirable.

Roadlok for me. Integrated onto the back of the caliper. Means I don't have to carry anything. Works very well

Onguard brutes (D lock) are good, just don't leave them outside in all weather as they can seize up. Over 16mm shackle.

They're big though, but they can go through the whole wheel. Use with a chain for more protection.

If you want something smaller, those abus disk locks are fine, but like people have mentioned, they can just cut the disc.

Something else to add, if you use it on the rear wheel/disc, its a lot hard to wheel away. Not gonna stop them from picking it up though

Is a D-lock any safer than a disc lock?

I'd have guessed – but I'm only guessing – that a disc lock on the rear wheel would be a better bet?
