I have been looking at giving up sports bikes finally as my back, neck etc are all suffering from various things, mainly being old. I keep coming back to the Tuono, haven't had the chance to sample one yet. Budget for this is sort of flexible but there appears to be some really nice used ones as against the newer model with active suspension. Are the new bikes worth the premium, has anyone owned both?

The original plan was to look at the Ducati, but tbh, i'm kidding myself and don't need the power. Similar budget will attain an 890 SD, another one so far not tried.

You don’t have to get the factory btw, the RR is basically the same bike, minus ohlins, paint and single seat.
Everything else is exactly the same. If you go for second hand make sure it’s 2017 onwards as it’s the electronics are better.
It’s been a great bike, have just past 9500 miles in 2 years, have tracked it, toured on it and general riding, the engine is sublime.

I've owned a 2016 from New, kept it 2 1/2 years and did 16,800 miles on it

Rode it most weekends, did a 10 day 4000 mile tour, Nurburgring a couple times, iom tt and a few track tracks

Sold that and bought a 2019 and have owned that just over 14 months. Currently on 10,000 miles

My first one funny enough got bought by a mate who saw it in the shop and that ones now at nearly 20,000 miles

I've had the factory on both but agree as said above the RR is a great bike too

I also agree 2017 onwards ideally. If you get the 15-16 1100 you will want to upgrade the master cylinder

I've got a few videos uploaded showing you both in action. Tbh I think when it comes to the Tuono on here I'll be one of the better experienced along with the above Andybow who've I've been on track with

I'm sure others with chip in but anything you need to know just ask. I'm just off 40 but years of racing and crashing have meant I don't enjoy a sports bike for road riding long term any more (I have a new gsxr too but it's mainly track only)

Looking at this bike for similar reasons ....
How useable is the quickshifter both up and down the box as my clutch hand really suffers now on the Ducati ..
How easy is it to put luggage on the bike as will be going to IOM next year

The quickshifter/ blipper is probably the best one on the market on a standard road bike, it’s very smooth.
Luggage is fine, you can put a tank ring on the tank (although at first it looks like you can’t) , both givi and sw motech work.
Ventura do a rack or you can get hepco and Becker plate.
It’s actually a comfy place to be all day.
Powerbronze screen is good for sustained speed.

You don't hang about!

Is the active suspension worth an extra £1500 on used bikes in your opinion? Dave Wood is in my neck of the woods and last time I spoke to him he was raving about them. Reliability wise, any issues with parts?

Have any current owners put either the ar racing or sc project cans on their bikes ...
If so .....have the dealers told you if it invalidates the warranty ...

QS on both pre 17 and after is very good. The blipper on the 17+ is more aggressive than my GSXR 1000

The electronics are very good. I much prefer how you can customise it more and adjust on the fly. The WC you can adjust while riding or just have off which I prefer unlike my GSXR where the safety police have it built into the TC so you have to turn the TC to min or off

The Aprilia also has 3 stage abs and you can turn off but unlike MOST jap bikes you don't need to turn it off as its such a good system. Pre 17 abs in 1 let's the rear wheel come off the ground. 17+ abs 1 turns off abs on the rear wheel

For shorter trips I use a kriegga us20 which specific kriegga fixings for the bike. I was a tester when they were designing this a few years back so they sent it all out for free and I sent loads of pics back showing what worked. You can now buy the kit to fit the kriegga nice and tight

For longer trips you'll want the hepco base unit which replaces the rear seat on the factory. You can then either use their top box or in my case a givi 40lt (might be 45lt can't remember) and fix onto this. I have plenty of step by step pictures but in short it worked great and let me enjoy 10 days away touring with absolutely no issues. I even did a lap of nurburgring with it on!

In my honest opinion yes. But this does very much depend on what you're after from a bike as the non Ohlins 17+is very good and the pre 17 Ohlins on the factory I found although a touch old in its design still very plush. I run a slightly harder setup for (hate this saying) fast road. Its great in the summer but a bit of a pig in the winter, whereas the semi active I just run sports in summer and road in winter. Then track for obviously track, Nurburgring etc. You can feel it actively work when you brake hard and it stiffens. I get minimal squat when pushing on which for me is more than enough for a road bike setup

No issues at all from the suspension. I've had a couple of small niggles on my 16 and my 19 but nothing really to moan about or stop me riding and easily fixed

Only thing I found on both was a real thorough check over needed for first 1500 miles as I found on both a few random things came loose like tail piece. Centre tank bolt, on the 19 the qs arm. Also both used a good 500-750 of oil within the first 1500-2000 miles but after barely used any. The engines/box feel better after a good few thousand miles and I see my average mpg sit low 40s now whereas it was always 37-39 for the first 3000 miles. Haven't changed my riding so assume engine is loosened?

My 16 had an AR GP1R fitted the moment I got home after buying the bike. I ran it a year before fitting the race map. Purchased at wheels in Peterborough, they never questioned anything or gave any problems when I had warranty work done on the discs etc (I know it's not related) but when when the exhaust valve started to play up at 14k they had no issues sorting

It ran better with the race map and I think as a bum on seat dyno the map gives it a touch crisper/cleaner mid range. I'd question it giving anything more than 1-2 ponies up top

My 19 has an official akrapovic and race map from day 1. As much as I prefer the shorter look I think I've out grown the noise and without question it rides, pulls and falls better with the longer akra exhaust

I’ve got Akrapovic , but a friend has SC and the dealer fitted it from new, he’s had no issues at all re warranty, to be fair nothings gone wrong. But they Definetly would honour anything if it had

My dealer told my fitting anything but the official Akrapovic would invalidate the warranty. I think the carbon Akrapovic looks good and I understand the sound is better and louder than stock but not too loud. I have just ordered one.

Has anyone changed wheels on a bike with the semi active suspension? Dealer couldn’t tell me whether having lighter wheels would upset the calibration of the system. He thought not but wasn’t sure (and didn’t think that Aprilia would give an answer for non approved wheels).
