My son, who will be 18 this month is doing his CBT this month and I've been looking at getting him insured on a Benelli TNT 125 that we already have and is used by me and the Mrs.

Running an insurance quote based on
Fully comp.
18 years old.
Currently in full time education (Military Preparation College)
Provisional licence.
CBT training only.
125cc bike.
Value £1200.
Garaged overnight.
3000 annual miles.
Decent postcode.

I returned 7 results from compare the market ranging from £850 to £12,750 per year.

Is anyone aware of any specialist insurers out there for new, young riders?
Or has anyone been through a similar process and found any way of reducing the annual premium?

Good luck with the education - a career in the Services, afterwards?

I don't specifically now - other than to perhaps using Google to search for forces friendly insurers - if you can qualify?

Give Bemoto a call if you haven’t already.

To be honest I don’t think 800 quid sounds too bad, new rider/driver tax is unavoidable. At least you can look forward to it coming down next year.

I agree, £850 wasnt too scary a proposition. It was with some obscure insurer though sonic that is the best I am able to get then I'll look at them a bit closer before proceeding.

Interesting point on the forces friendly insurers too, he will be moving on to a career within the forces as soon as the recruitment offices open back up. Not coming from a military background myself, that never occurred to me as a potential option.

I never bothered with a tpf&t quotation as when ive ran them for myself in the past they usually come out about the same as fully comp.

Likewise with Bemoto, I called them for a renewal quote on my own bike a few weeks ago and they were quite a decent bit more expensive than Bennetts, who I am currently insured with. I figured the same would apply to him?

For a new rider I'd expect fully comp to be expensive - even a very minor drop will write off a bike at oe prices. try tpft

Paid £450 FC when I was 17 (12 years ago now BUT it was ridiculous then too, particular for car insurance).

I also had a trails type bike which adds a premium due to stealing for off-road use.

I then changed to a Bandit 600, which cost me £190 to insure... figure that one out haha.

£64 this year on a Fazer... happy days!

Used A-plan when I was 17 for bike....had to ring them though.
Crowthorne insurance for car - They specialised in young drivers at the time, don't know if they still do but they do do motorcycles after a quick browse on their website.

It dropped to £628 on tpf&t. Which is pretty decent considering.

To add helmet and leathers cover is another 40 odd quid for the year too. So seeing as though he has a signed Hiccy TT Shoei replica helmet it will be well worth taking that out too.

Scrap the fully comp and just do TPO.. spend the saving on decent security. I wouldn't claim for a bike worth £1000, it would only impact by renewals for the next 5 years... not worth it.

That is exactly what I will end up doing.
Can't see me being able to get it much lower than that to be honest.
I'll order a couple of sets of skateboard wheels to add as crash protection too.

Does the price come down if you add yourself and/or the Mrs. as named riders?

This. A claim for a bike at this price point is going to make things really bad - so bad that I'd not bother claiming. TPO and teach him to ALWAYS lock the bike up, even if he is just popping in the papers shop or turning his back on it for a moment.

I'm 52 and I am like that with my security now - even if it's for a minute the chain goes on. I know how badly a claim fks you up.
