Waiting for the centres to open again to book my test etc. In the mean time I've been doing insurance quotes and looking at bikes online to see what I could get. Would be a weekend toy and only used on warmer days.

Ideally a Street Triple but I just can't insure one for a reasonable cost, even the 2011 one.

My list at the moment:

Ducati Monster 696 - the cheapest to insure
Ducati Monster 796
Yamaha MT07 - sensible choice?
Ducati Scrambler - looks decent but also weird
Aprilia Dorsoduro 750
Ducati Hypermotard 796
Kawasaki Z800

A few ducatis there but for some reason they seem to be the most reasonable for me to insure.

Any opinions or other suggestions?

I'm 6 foot 2 and about 90kg. I'm looking at sub 5k ish.

I’d buy a snotter for a grand because you will probably drop it / bash it. When you have a years ncb get something nice and the insurance will be much less of an issue.

Buy the one you want the most.

If the MT07 is the 'sensible choice' you can take that one off the list smile

696 Monster or Hypermotard would be my choice, but then I am biased. Easy to ride, and easy to ride fast once you get into the 'L twin' way of riding

I am same height. My gf had 696.
696 is fun above 4000rpm, but it will be small for you.

Insurance on the ones I've listed isn't that bad, I'd rather buy something I actually like tbh, can always repair it if I drop it etc

Haha good point, yeah I'm not really feeling an Mt07 and they look quite small, think I'll take it off the list although no doubt it is a good bike

Yeah they seem to be the ones I'm drawn to most, I'm thinking hypermotard as I think the Monster may be a bit small

I hadn't really considered that, good point. Hypermotard looks a bit bigger so may be better for me

My first bike was a Monster 750 (2002), loved it, but the seat height was quite low. I'm now on a Hypermotard 796, it is much more comfortable and a great ride. As others have said, definitely get a bike you want, where is the fun in riding around on a stter? I'm 6'2" and 90kg too.

i'd look at the insurance for each.

I got a hell of a shock when a tracer 700 (MT07 in drag) was £300 more expensive to insure than a triumph tiger 800!!

No worries, I thought it would out sensible the 'sensible' MT-07.

The 796 has quite a bit more power than the 696 too.

FWIW I love my 796 Monster, can't think of anything I want to replace it for jollies up a country road. Mine's been faultless as well so far.

796 Monsters are not on my radar, and I love the high exhaust look even though it puts loads of mass right up high by your bum.

696 also has high exhaust, I never felt it was detrimental to the ride, it is a tiny bike but it is fun and has good torque.

796 is probably higher (I do not know) and it also looks better than 696 because of one-sided swingarm.

796 only had like 10hp more, am I wrong?

Here’s my 2p for what it’s worth.

I’ve just come back to bikes last year after a near 20 year gap.

I wanted something to build up both confidence and NCD before getting something bigger, so after reading the reviews and having a test ride I went for a brand new MT-07.

I’m over 6’4”. I got the “high seat” option on the ‘bike. Had it nearly a year now and loving it. The low down torque on it is brilliant and I’ve had a lot of fun chucking it around twisty B roads. I’m certainly not bored of it yet. I’ve swapped it with mates out on rides and had nothing but positive comments.

I would say it’s a perfect bike for someone like the op who has just passed their test, or someone like me who is returning after a big lay off.

Get some test rides on the bikes you’re interested in. You’ll know the right one for you when you ride it!

Just get something you really like.. going for the sensible option and you’ll be bored in a few weeks after passing your test.
