Buying a helmet during Covid pandemic...
Discussion
Has anyone had much luck trying lids on during this here Covid nonsense?
My local bike shop weren't keen on letting me try on lids for obvious reasons, which I fully accept and understand.
It does leave me in a bit of a pickle though. My current helmet (KBC VR2 cheapo) is well past it's best and I'm in need of a new one. I know what size I am, but I've never tried any other makes. The KBC fits ok, but I've seen a nice Shoei that's in the clearance sale on infinity's website and I don't know if it's too much of a gamble. Anyone went from KBC to Shoei?
It's all RemaL's fault anyway, it was his 'first project bike' thread that got me looking, and now I'm back on two wheels!
Thanks in advance

Let you try on any lid but have to wear some kind of gimp balaclava thing which you take home as a souvenir, top guys there too!
Worth a look if in the area.

I'm up in Yorkshire so I'm a good way from Surrey. BUT, that's a great ide. I wonder if any of the bigger places in York have put something similar in place... Let you try on any lid but have to wear some kind of gimp balaclava thing which you take home as a souvenir, top guys there too!

Thanks bud
I'm hoping the sportsbike store near me will do something like that when they're open next week, I did read something somewhere that one of the manufacturers was doing the balaclava thing for trying on helmets. Everywhere is still operating a returns policy so even if you take a punt on something but it's not a good fit when you get home you can always take it back. It's not ideal but as good as it's going to get for a while.
go into shop when they open
1. tell them you've had OC 43 and therefore have immunity for C19
2. shave head/beard go into shop with bottle of sanitizer slap it on all over son - for the great smell of dettol and stuff said head into helmet
3. go to sex shop and purchase gimp mask, try on helmets keep gimp mask to spice up love life after - dual purpose; when in sex shop purchase other items for fun and frolics in lock-down
4. just go online and blow your credit card sit in the luxury of own home - then feel guilty for not supporting the local shop

Would strongly recommend being able to try on a Shoei in-store. One of the greatest beauties of them is that within the price you can completely customise the interior of the helmet to get the perfect fit. For example, I fall between a medium (shell too tight) and a large, I get a perfect fit using a complete medium lining in a large shell helmet, something that Helmet City did for me included in the deeply discounted price of my Spirit 3 lid.

I think you're right. Sadly, the nearest big place to me that stocks Shoei is over an hour away. Biker 1 said:
Buy online, but measure your head multiple times first!
Helmet City are good, as is Sportsbikeshop. A bit of an arse returning stuff, but you'll get there in the end...
I've measured it a good few times now, and I've had a mate help me and have ended up with pretty much the same measurement. It's the fitting part I'm concerned about having never had a Shoei, but you're right I can always return it. Helmet City are good, as is Sportsbikeshop. That's a very good point, and I hadn't considered that at all. Maybe I'm better waiting until I can get one delivered for collection and then have it fitted while I'm in. Thanks for the help lads, much appreciated.
I’ve just bought a Neotec 2 from Helmet City - they’ve got 20% off at the moment and free returns. I imagine they have to wipe down any returns and then leave them in quarantine for 72 hours or something, not easy for a small shop but for a company that size probably not an issue.
I was concerned about fitting so I had a chat with them, they gave good advice and the Neotec 2 has replaceable linings in various sizes, so if it doesn’t fit they will send you out the right size in exchange for the originals back. As it happens it fits perfectly, and it’s a bloody lovely helmet. I think most of their business is online, so this is all business as usual for them.

I've been to SBS in MK this afternoon, limited to 6 people in the shop at any time, balaclava and mask to try on helmets, disposable gloves for gloves, anything touched and not bought by a customer gets steam cleaned then doesn't get put back in to circulation for a few days.
It feels a bit weird in the paper balaclava but doesn't affect the fit, staff were attentive within guidelines, I got everything I needed. I actually thought the staff in there did a really good job considering this is the first day of the new normal for them.
