Due to various reasons I've cancelled a £165 bike insurance policy after 3.5 months

I know you tend to get screwed on such things (yes it's buried in the T&Cs but they're all as bad) but was slightly peeved that I was only offered £21 back

The reason for posting is because I mentioned that I thought it was taking the pi$$ and they waived their fee so it increased to £56

So it's worth a (friendly) moan

Your not the only one mate, Ive just been ripped off by an insurance company
went with One Call insurance this time instead of my usual Bennetts just to save a few quid

They left it until the third week of the insurance (so out of the cooling of period) before contacting me about my NCB I assumed they would get proof off the NCB database but no they wanted written proof , so I sent them the paperwork I got from Bennetts proving my NCB but they wont accept it as it doesnt have an adequate company header on the letter, so contacted Bennetts and they just sent me the same paperwork I already had.

Ended up canceling the insurance with One Call received no refund and re insured with Bennetts as I didnt want to loose my 4 year NCB.

It's probably of no help now, but it might be in the future.

I'm insured with bennetts as well and I'm sure they have something on their app / website where you can download a pdf proof of no claims? The PDF has all bennetts details on it too.

A few years back I was looking to get some short-term insurance on a bike I was restoring, it was cheap enough but the 3 months or so I wanted was about the same as a full year so I insured for the year, my view being that any refund when cancelling would be a bonus.

After a few months I rang up the insurer to cancel it and they told me that the admin fee to make the change was greater than the refund that I would get and so wanted me to pay to cancel the policy!

I left the policy in place however they told me (wrongly, I believe) that by doing this, that if the bike was then to be insured by someone else that I would be breaking the law as you can't have 2 policies on the same bike...

Some years ago I had bike insurance with Motorcycle Direct. When it was time to renew I didn't take their renewal as it was too dear, instead taking an online quote of theirs and purchasing that policy instead. So just to be clear, I was insured by Motorcycle Direct consecutively both years.

Motorcycle Direct then decided to cancel my new policy after a few months because I hadn't provided them proof of no claims, even though THEY were my previous insurer!!! So they had wanted me to send them their own paperwork - madness!!!

Needless to say I don't touch them with a bargepole nowadays.

I tried to prevent my insurance auto renewing. They gave me fair warning it was going to happen. Where it fell down was the call centre was only taking calls from NHS/key workers at the time. I respected that and used the online portal as suggested. My request not to auto renew was ignored and was my subsequent request for it to be cancelled and refunded.

They have since had the cheek to send me ‘Corona Virus: we’re here for you’ emails when they quite clearly are not.

Not the end of the world as I am planning to get my bike back on the road this month, and things obviously got a bit crazy for a while.

Needless to say I won’t use them again next year (if they let me leave!).

I had a policy with Hastings and changed my bike for the same model but 2 years newer half way through the policy. They decided they didn’t want to insure the new bike so I was cancelling the policy and would not refund the 6 months (£175). They also wanted to charge me £35 admin fee to keep my money. All I could get was the admin fee waived so I also lost 6 months NCB.

I despise insurance companies with a passion. These so called admin fees are a joke.

I don't use insurance companies that insist on auto-renewal, most will try it on or at least 'offer' it to you as if it's some kind of bonus but if they won't drop it then I'll go elsewhere...

I agree they are losing money but £10 for a 2 minute conversation seems enough.

It was when I told her that she was charging more than my solicitor that she said she'd drop it.

I ALWAYS set auto renew to no. It’s not me having a faulty memory - I am very specific about this.

So I noticed that one of the R1s which was due back in May said on the renewal letter from Carole Nash “you do not need to do anything as auto renew” etc.

Gah.

So I rang and spoke to some chap who said “although it says that, we don’t have your payment method, so it still won’t auto renew.”

I think he was just a lazy bd - because guess what? Yep. It auto renewed, so I then had all the palaver of cancelling it etc.

I won’t in future after this piss take. This year has been odd as I’m normally using the bike in May.
