Hi, I'm going to look at a CCM Dual Sport this weekend. I have a £2000-£2500 budget. Is it better than an LC4 KTM. I'm not a hardcore Supermoto guy by any means. I want something to potter around on. No great mileage will be done just the odd blast around the lanes and an odd ride to,work. It's the Rotax engined version and quite old but good condition.
Does anyone have any advice or better ideas for my money?

Unless there's something specific with that particular one, Rotex engines are generally very robust. CCM are usually pretty high quality too, although they may have little design niggles.

I'd go for it over a cheap KTM that's been thrashed tbf.

Thank you, I know neither are particularly quick it’s just for shots and giggles. The one I’m looking at has the pumper carb and a big bore kit fitted.

Rotax engines are great, unless CCM got their hands on it. Nothing but trouble and a ballache to rebuild.

Later Suzuki engined ones are better, but none are a patch on the KTM

Supermoto is as follows

KTM
Suzuki DR's
Husqvarna
Honda XR's
Various other exotica that will punch you in the wallet.

Ouch😔I heard the Suzuki engines were bad. It’s an early model W reg. I’m not a serious rider it’s only to go to work on occasionally and go into town. It won’t be racing anything.

Suzuki ones are better.

I have one here just now, but it's going as soon as poss.

The later ones are OK but really can be a pain obtaining spares for them, and finding out what parts they have used from what other bikes to obtain compatible parts.

KTM if you fancy the supermoto thing. Or DR's like I said. Both much better and easier options.

At the time they were current I recall CCMs being more a PITA than the LC4 KTM, though KTM werent perfect the LC4 range issues are well known and later wasn't always better for some LC4 derivatives. lots of info out there if you look for model specific forums or threads on bike specific forums. I owned a 640 Duke LE , no issues with the engine once I sorted out cold start issues, re-jetted idle fuel to lean out the mixture in the Dellorto slide carb.

My 640 Lc4 was brought out the shed, hammered stupid for a day and put away again after a fettle. Repeat twice a week for 7 years.

Not one failure, at all. Nothing, I even sold it with the original chain and sprockets.

All it had was oil, filters, pads and lots and lots of tyres.

Aren’t the 640s heavy and slower than the CCM?

Nope

Very little between them tbh , just far better build quality and owning experience. And better suspension.

All supermotos are pretty slow top end, just wheelie monsters that corner like they are glued down.

I get that but surely the KTM is heavier than the CCM

Lol I’m very confused now. Not sure which way to go, the CCM is quite old.

Having gone through this recently - if you're willing to do the oil changes, KTM 525 is the best by far, complete wheelie monster, superb suspension and 107kg, loads of parts available £2500 will get a good one possibly with a set of off road wheels too

I'd then go KTM 640 they were £2k in the winter but prices have shot up, the Duke has better spec but personally I'm not a fan of it's looks - easier to maintain but 40kg heavier must be a grey engine version.

CCM is reknowned for niggly issues I'd only look at the 650 or 400 (both suzuki engines)

Bigger / heavier bike and currently you'd be lucky to find a decent one below £3500

I went down this adventure a couple of months back and bought what I did not expect , but absolutely love the thing I ended up with . I go to it over any of my other bikes now . Thinking of selling others as I have finally found a great bike for messing about . Its not a continental tourer but a fab grab and go bike. Aprilia Dorsoduro 750.
