Anyone had problems AFTER they told them not to renew. Read that they just take you money regardless.

OP states auto-renewing AFTER being told not to.

I have just cancelled a CN policy. I phoned them up to cancel and was as concerned as you about whether they would take the money regardless.

They didn't, so I was happy.

If they do take the money, you do have the 14 days to cancel online purchases thing.

https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/insuran...

Although I imagine they may charge you for the couple of days it took you to notice the cash missing from your account.

Nervy times, best of luck

Ask a supervisor at CN to pull the recorded phone call then..if thats not successful or they refuse to (as Swintons did to me once), head to https://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/consumers/c...

They'll soon put it right then.

They did it to me - I know for a fact that I did not allow auto-renew, I’m very particular about that.

Got renewal letter “don’t worry we will automatically etc etc”

Rang them up, was assured it WOULD NOT auto renew.

Guess what.

This - and I always call my existing insurer up just prior to renewal, you know to see if they want to keep an existing customer - the policy is (has) always (been) more expensive than quotes I have from other sources. Is it that hard they cannot genuinely meet competitive quotes, especially as they might have provided one of these 'competitive' quotes?

They really don't help themselves...

If I call and ask not to renew, I also ask for a confirmation e-mail from them.
Just in case they do take the money and you dont notice for a while.

Extra trick up their sleeve a few months ago, perhaps even still now, is that they can only handle calls from key workers or NHS because of reduced staff due to Covid. Automated message says to use the online portal. They then completely ignore instruction left on portal and renew your policy anyway.

At least that's what Hastings did.

I use Heritage Car Insurance. They don't auto renew, I can get through to them every time and matched last years premium.

Looks like I had a lucky escape with CN, maybe they took my request not to renew more seriously because I was selling it.
Do they still have the chat windows with the option to email the transcript?

Simple enough.

Save a copy of the request to not renew, email, screenshot chat etc. Then either (a) call the insurance company demand your money back, provide the evidence, or (b) call your debit/credit company, and ask for a "chargeback" due to "clerical error" on behalf the insurance company.

I had the reverse with CN. I rang up to cancel the auto-renewal at the end of June because I could get it cheaper elsewhere and was told the policy was not on auto-renewal.

This is despite the email (since they never wrote to me until the day before and I had to chase them for a quote) stating that it WAS going to auto-renew. frown Left hand - right hand what are you doing? The renewal quote arrived in the post 1 day before expiry. Not impressed.

All helps to push up premiums when you naively don’t check that it has actually renewed and get caught without.
