As I get older I find the sun in my eyes is getting harder to deal with. More than half a century ago when I was competing we used to deal with this by putting a strip of insulating tape over the top half of our goggles or visor so I thought that by now there was sure to be a choice of products on the market. There seems to be almost nothing however and what there is has terrible reviews. How do you guys deal with this issue?

Photochromic visor.

Not sure if you are aware that you can buy helmets with a built in, drop down sun visor now??

Glare or low sun?

Only a strip of tape or similar will block out the latter, but you'll still have problems with contrast if you're on country roads.

To be honest they aren't for me either, i much prefer a photochromic or proper tinted visor. But I know the drop down varieties are popular with a lot of people.

OT but ... Do you find that fog and overcast rainy days confuses your visor? Mine has a tendancy to turn dark when it's like that. It was a bit of an inconvenience when it was raining at Croft last week and I was trying to learn a new circuit with a dark, rain soaked visor.

Glare or low sun?

It's a bit of both I think but probably more low sun as when I am out in my open car wearing a peaked cap I don't have a problem. I was hoping to find something that I can fit to my existing helmet visor rather than buy a new one. I found a photochromic inner but the reviews were terrible. The solution might be a bit off a roll of windscreen strip but there would probably be some unhelpful rule about that!

I put a strip of insulation tape on my last helmet worked fine, new helmet has this, which is great, don’t think I’ve ridden with the tinted section down yet as it provides all the protection I need with it down.

Got an Schuberth with a drop down sun visor and and Arai with the over shield sun visor. The latter is more of a PITA as it seems to get dirtier quicker and you (or i) only notice when using, thats only if your like me and dont do a deep lid clean before ever ride so if you like to polish yer helmet every time before using then that probably wont be an issue , though any use in damp weather will likely result in it getting grubby for when the sun breaks out . So in essence Arai is not as a convenient sunvisor a fix IMO. Anyways have mentally decided to never buy another lid without a sunvisor (until the day I break that self imposed rule) , even if it means Aria's over visor sunvisor.

Tape on the visor as seen on the black one on the right.

I like using a road legal tinted visor now (only a light tint), but when I was a poor student I had success with a sunax sunshield. It allows you to see through it still, while blocking low sun and can be fitted / removed relatively quickly.

Unless you want to live with a peaked ADV helmet tape's the best answer. I used to commute East-West and at certain times a year it was mare with sun in your eyes. I fitted a sunstrip for other reasons but found it really helped in a way an internal dark visor didn't:

Thank you all for you replies, very kind of you to take the time and much appreciated. Looks like insulating tape then, as in 1967!!

I've always used tape in the past, found it wasn't wide enough for the depth of modern visors - use some black fablon from a DIY shop - can make as deep as you want.

Never thought of that, brilliant - thanks! Not sure if we can get Fablon here but there's always Ebay for vinyl wrap which I guess would work as well.
