Now i own a bike from the 90s and some of the parts are no longer available/bloody expensive, is it possible to use 'universal' parts without damaging the bike?

For example an oil cooler is north of £400 if you can find one, but demon tweaks sell universal competition ones for around £60.

There's no reason why you can't as long as it is similar in capacity, its just a heat exchanger, the bike won't know you have a different one on!

Plenty of folk use aftermarket parts in specials and competition bikes, you could also bypass it if the bike is water cooled and change the oil more often, bikes are made for a global market so have to able to work in all temperature ranges, it wouldn't concern me so much if it was just a road bike being used in the UK.

Personally I'd be very wary of a £60 oil cooler, seems a bit too cheap to me and as bimsb6 rightly says, it won't fit anything properly.

When I fitted a larger, curved oil cooler to my FrankenTrumpet to make it fit some parts needed to be modified and some had to be fabricated from scratch. That sort of thing is not a problem for me as a precision engineer but just try talking a machine shop into making some fiddly little brackets...
