at a real cross roads. Have a relatively low value bike (2015 Yamaha MT-125) that is a non runner. Long story short it over-revved and now it turns over but doesn't fire. Breakdown suggested cam timing may have skipped a tooth and as such engine is likely scrap. Bike is relatively high mileage, about 20,000 miles and I reckon in good running order is worth ~£2k tops. I've started stripping the bike to remove the engine but not sure I have the time/interest to go through with it and don't want to hamper my re-sale efforts if I go spares/repair route.

So do I try to source and engine or have this one rebuilt, likely costing around £500-1000, or is it likely to sell as spares/repair? Not been in the bike world for long so don't know what demand would likely be. If I could get £1k as is I'd probably be happy, does this seem realistic?

Any constructive advice greatly appreciated!

I want to know how you got a poll going????

Re the bike... strip for spares and dump the rest. It's neither a valuable nor interesting bike... why bother.

I don't know the market for 125s well but I can't see you getting 1k for a non runner. 500 max would be my guess. Depends if the money you can save doing it yourself is worth your time. For me it'd be an afternoon stripping the current engine and price up to fix it or a used replacement. Replacing the engine will only take a couple of hours.

Strip it for spares and sell it separately if you can be arsed, otherwise I'd just bang it up on eBay with a clear description and see what you get.

If you pay to fix it you won't see that money back imho, never do.

That mileage on a 125cc would make it a hard sell.

If the chain has skipped then you could be into a top end rebuild minimum. I would be changing the pistons or at least the rings too.

With fluids and filters plus new chain kit I reckon if you get £500 you've done well.

Where abouts are you ?

Surely worth pulling the engine to see whats wrong ? Then either fix it or a 2nd hand engine
