Going to look at a Yamaha X-City 250cc scooter later for zipping around town. Are there any known issues to look for? No chain to worry about, no clutch or gearbox. Only thing I can really think of are head bearings, brake disks/pads... and not much else. It's done less than 9000 miles in 10 years so hardly over-used.

You don't live in That London - so go for it.

Rear tyre.

Depending on the set up you will need to take the exhast off and half the swingarm off to get the wheel out.

No special tools but maybe 30-45 minutes out and the same back in again. Bike shops will charge for this and some standard tyre places won't do scooters.

I do live in That London! At least for the moment anyway.

Is it likely to already be stolen, or just guaranteed to go missing within days?

Almost a certainty, do an insurance quote before you buy, you might not get cover.

I had an SH300 for a while to commute into London. Hassle free, reliable, cheap to run, etc.

I did all servicing myself. Rear wheel a pain to remove for new tyres, as mentioned above. Clutch did need replacing, managed to do it myself. Replacing belts a bit of a pain - and they are worth replacing because I had one snap!

Fun to ride in some ways, but not as much fun as a geared bike.

Is riding around London traffic ever fun?

Thanks for the tips, I'll check out insurance for this specific bike, but in general the quotes for 2010 X-City's have been lower than other things like 600CBF/ Yamaha divvy/ NC700 etc.

I'll second this - best bike for London IMO. Rapid up to London speeds, good fun to ride, not a theft magnet and what I found best, narrow which made filtering easy. I'd second what triple said, keep on top of belt maintenance - I snapped 2, the second time locking the rear wheel at 50 eek ...

EDIT - ok thanks. Belt is less than £50 which is reasonable enough.
