Read in MNC that BMW are launching a new chain as an option on the S1000RR and S1000R that doesn’t need lubrication nor adjusting. I wonder whether it will fit my Tuono?

I read about it too, and the chain looks like it could fit any bike. But it's about five hundred quid! Cheaper than shaft drive, and less damage-prone than belt drive, I suppose.

I'd wait and see what the reality is. I hope they have solved it, but I'm sceptical to be honest.

At £500 it’s dead easy. Stick a normal chain in the box and give a lifetime warranty.

Yeah it’s probably a numbers game for them. Three year unlimited mileage warranty sounds good but the chain is bound to be cleaned and lubed at the required service intervals. It’ll be the same as warranty stuff excluding wear and tear so £500 a throw makes it s good earner for them.

All the reports I've seen have said it's a £100 option.

it'll come pre-fitted and any warranty will be voided if its cut or seperated.

Seriously though, is checking your chain THAT difficult?? And besides, it's good practice ot have a propoer look over the bike to check for other issues or problems....

As I have seen mentioned elsewhere even if the chain itself doesn't wear the sprockets will so they will require cleaning and lubrication anyway.

Had one of those on my 400/4 when I bought it (40 years ago), didn’t last long!

I’m a lazy fecker and love riding not tinkering so any time I get “allowed” by the wife, daughter and dog at the weekend I like to go out on the bike not clean in. Lubed chains = filth.

How many miles do you do that it'd be so arduous?

It's not always the miles. In winter - especially when it's raining - not having to faff about with chain maintenance is bonus.

So it will cost 5x more than a normal chain, but it saves you checking it ? ...I guess if its going on a 10-20k mile a year touring bike, but then Id prefer my tourer to be shaft drive .....

as they move towards euro 5 shaft will become a thing of the past as the losses are too high?

Unlikely. They'll just address the Euro regs as best they can and up the capacity as required to make the power.

Shaft (whether you like it or not) is definately a USP for some
