I had a very similar price conversation with a friend recently who bought a new BMW K1300S in 2011 but was squirming at the cost of a new H2 SX. We looked up the RPI changes since 2011 and used the cost of his brand new (then) K1300S as the baseline. Just using the RPI changes got us to less than £500 difference from the new H2 SX price.
Take a (real) price of a new bike of a similar style/capacity from the days when "bike pricing was reasonable" and apply the RPI changes for the intervening years and I'll bet the price of the new R18 is not far out!

BMW pricing has lost the plot.
Guberment tells you there is no inflation. Inflation is actually everywhere.BMW pricing has lost the plot.
A £6500 superbike from 1990 is a £15k bike in todays money.
and if you haven't had a 30% pay rise over the last 10 years in real terms you have had a pay cut, thanks to the governments use of their favourite form of stealth tax......a couple of percent a year does not sound like much but soon adds up
I looked at one in the BMW dealership last weekend, can't say I really liked it to be honest, mind you didn't test ride it. However, strangely I do have the slight hots for the Indian Scout which is getting on for 1/2 the price. Think if I were in the market for such a bike that's where my money would be, albeit not the same engine size etc.

They even call it "a target" and tell us how much they plan to steal from us on yearly basis.
2% normally, but now since they cannot achieve that level (according to their computational method, which is criminally flawed), they talk about "average target", meaning over time they want 2% average robbery, but in-between they can have higher level, and, of course, they do not really specify the time frame over which this average is going to be computed, it is a clever cop-out to rob more on a continuous basis.
