Currently I have a Tuono Factory 19. Overall probably the best bike I’ve owned. Stupidly powerful, sounds great, handles amazingly and has a full, electronic safety net to help out if I fk up. Minor quibbles: poor range (and no range counter), not the easiest to refuel and although looks good isn’t great.

Generally I’ve owned more than one bike. However the Tuono being so good I am struggling to justify (even to me) buying something else. Doesn’t help that road tax here in NZ is almost £300 a year per bike.

Other problem is that the secondhand market here is pants. I keep thinking of an RS250 but in the year I’ve been here only a handful have come up for sale and the recent ones have been in Christchurch (so I would have to buy blind and spend £300 getting it transported to Auckland).

There is an original R1 - one owner - in blue that is tempting but having never ridden one I can’t help thinking it would be similar too similar to the Tuono to justify having it as a second bike.

Fortunately, although the bike market is rubbish the roads are brilliant.

Grab that R1 if it's really early, in good condition with low KM's on the clock! I'd imagine they'd be at least a bit different to a Tuono. I4, less power, lower handlebars, carbies....

The second hand bike market here in Aus is getting towards non-existent too. I was looking on bikesales.com.au the other day and noticed that there are more Harleys for sale than Hondas. Half the number of Ducati's than there normally would be. Virtually zero sports bikes from the 90's and early to mid 2000's.....

Is NZ not full of amazing gravel roads for exploring on? I'd be tempted to go for a dual sport since the Tuono would be difficult to better on tarmac. Something KTM flavoured probably.

I see lots of dirt bikes here...but always on the back of utes. Not 100% sure where they are being ridden. I’ve got space in the garage for another bike but not a ute or even a trailer

Mostly the Sandpit at the north end of Woodhill forest. Up SH16 and turn left a few Ks before Helensville.

Great fun if you like riding on sand. You can rent bikes and gear there too.

Or get an old-school traillie and start exploring the gravel roads. Pretty much everything that goes near the cost ends up in a few Ks of gravel, sometimes much more. It does wonders for your bike handling.

Thanks. Just googled and that looks really interesting. Think I will try that out in the next couple of weeks.

If you're happy with the Tuono then go for a bike for very different reasons. As already suggested, something with some off-road capability, or a cruiser. or a a classic.

My second bikes used to be similar to my main bike but always felt "bettered" by the main bike. Since I bought an early eighties air cooled BMW, it's been great. It's easy and fun to work on, it's got loads of character, it's fun to ride as I know it'll never be "as good" as my main bike and it's earning money just by being sat in my shed.

I'd be getting a crf250 for some low speed on/off road entertainment.

In fact I'm off to look at the pcp deals now..

Miss my Tuono 1100, and having sold my SuperDuke last year I’m without and bike and keen to get back in the saddle. The idea of another Tuono is really appealing, but like you, i think something like an RS250 would complement it well. I’m mechanically inept so a Daytona 675 or even the new RS660 would probably be a better choice for me.

If there's lots of gravel roads what about something like an old Tenere or Africa Twin?

Having recently visited NZ I’ve got to agree with this. Seems like a fantastic place for some genuine adventure riding.

I agree with the dual sport suggestions. Such a large empty country, they seem like the obvious choice.

Or if you're sticking closer to home a drz400 or similar.

It must be hard with Tuono, I mean, it is two bikes in one, a RSV4 with less fairing and straight bar. :-)

I guess you need to understand what you want from the second bike, what you will use it for.

Haven't tried the old R1, som my suggestion, if older sportsbike, I would suggest CBR954RR, it is comfortable like a naked, and it has this funny almost turbocharged behaviour when exhaust valve opens at ~3200rpm.

Recently I tried my first KTM in the shape of 890R Duke.
It had significant improvements over 790.
It has IMU with latest electronics, it has Stylema, weighs 165kg dry, 116hp on back wheel, 99nm torque.

I took it out, it is a goddamn toy, looks like a toy, feels like a toy, goes well and is exciting, but feels like a toy. :-)
