125 or under "winter project" suggestions...
Discussion
So a weird set of circumstances in 2020 has led me to look for something to tinker with over winter, primarily because there is now a space in the garage and I want something for my son to learn spannering on. I don't have a full licence, nor currently, the funds to acquire one, so I'm after something I can actually use on the road should I decide to (but this will mainly be a field bike).
Being of a certain age, I jumped on ebay and facebook marketplace and proceded to key in the usual suspects of my younger days... TS50, H100, RXS100, DT125 etc.. As you can imagine, once I'd picked myself up off the floor I started looking at other marques.
So my question is, do any of these LCC brands actually stand up to being used, and crucially, can you get spares for them?
The names I keep seeing regularly are Sinnis, Lexmoto and Keeway?
Failing that, anyone got an old DT50 they don't want much money for? I really don't want to have to resort to him learning to fix a step through

I'm in a similar situation myself.
I was planning on turning my current 125 Benelli in to a little 'Pit Bike' over the winter for use on kart tracks next year.
After speaking to my pal though that plan will likely not work so it will be getting sold to fund a pitbike from Symoto or similar.
I also noticed when searching around today that there seems to be some canny Yamaha R125's kicking about too which could make an interesting Freetech build.

To be fair, there's nothing wrong with a twist and go stepthrough. A year ago I brought home a Chinese 50cc twist and go that I'd bought and put on the road a few years earlier (long story, Q plate) and handed it to my (then) 15yo son and pointed him at the tool box.
To his credit, he stripped the front forks, carb, took the wheels off (to get new tyres fitted) and repainted it from canary yellow to satin matte black. Got it running sweet as you like and it sailed through the MOT. And it's just done exactly the same 12 months later.
