Hello, planning to get a basic bobber built next year. Engine noise is key for me. The best engine sounds (for me) are Vincent v twins and pre-unit Triumphs. I assume I can neither buy nor afford a Vincent engine (though please correct me if I'm wrong).

Pre-unit Triumphs sound brilliant (to my ears) also.
I'm no mechanic though. I'd happily use a more modern, more reliable, engine, provided I could get it to sound as good as this old Triumph engine:

It's a specific type of noise - lumpy idle and a roar when you roll on the throttle. It doesn't really exist in modern factory bikes.

Q: is it possible to get a modern engine to sound as good as that? And when I say "modern" , I mean a Japanese engine from the 80s on, or a British engine from the 90s onwards.

I know this may seem like a silly query; however, engine noise is a major part of why I like bikes and cars in the first place.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

I think modern triumph parralell twin engines are likely to give you the closest match to what you are after.

See link below of a triumph scrambler that they then take the silencers off of. Sounds fairly close to what you're after I think

What you are after is a 360 degree parallel twin (i.e. pistons rise and fall together). With "healthy" breathing. Most modern parallel twins are 270 degree units because they are meant to sound like a Harley. (They don't, BTW.) XS 650 Yammie is a good bet. Still relatively easily available.

Interesting - learn something every day, did not know that. XS 650 also sounds great - many thanks - now have a lot more options at sensible £ - ta
