Currently looking at getting myself another set of leathers and for £900 I can pick up an airbag equipped RST V4.1 1 piece suit.

Sticking to the same price point I could also pick up something like a Held Slade 1 price or Alpinestars GP Plus / Atem V3 non airbag equipped 1 piece.

Now I'm not really an Alpinestars fan so would be swayed more towards something from Held at that price point.

I would go up to around £1200 which again, the offerings from Held are the ones which I would sway towards.

As I'm getting a new suit I do like the idea of having it airbag equipped, but the quality of them is a concern, I've seen how easily they come apart in a fairly minor spill.

For £1500 the Dainese Misano airbag suit comes in to range too. But I notice they state that their airbag is optimised for track and not road??

For reference I will be wearing it on track and road and currently have worn Furygan before but their current suits look disgusting so arent even a consideration right now.

Thoughts and suggestions welcomed.

If you can afford to go Held or Dainese, I would.

I have always found RST to be poor quality. Work okay for a few months, but then zips break, threads come undone, etc.

I have heard that the Dainese Air Bag suits do get very hot.

Opinions eh! I have an RST 'Blade' suit I bought in 2013. It has been a great bit of kit. The only issue I have is that the velcro on the trouser fastener needs renewing now. During this time my pal has had two Dainese suits, both have had to be returned for zips replacing. I hate having choices.

All my gear is RST and it's worn really well over the last couple of years, I look a bit of a tosser in head-to-toe their gear, but tbh it's the right price/quality and fit for me.

I'd try the V4 suit on and see what it's like.

I'd go for the airbag suit over no-airbag. Having the extra protection is so worth it and the kit is getting really clever these days.

RST usually being the cheaper offering doesn't make it bad and I had one of their Tractech Evo 2 suits for a few years and even had a spill in it. Held up fine but never really liked the looks. Just the price. Good kit for the money.

One way of keeping the price down on the V4.1 suit is to use pre-developed airbag tech from a company called, In&Motion. They also provide the tech for Held, Furygan, Klim, & Ixon. They just buy the airbag tech and put it in their products to create a cheaper alternative to the Italian brands. It doesn't require any cables and is all done through sensors & algorithms, like the Dainese Misano. But, you have to register and pay a subscription to In&Motion to be "protected" by their technology, although the first 48 hours are free! (as well as a year of their track algorithm with the V4.1 suit)

Regarding the Misano & it's "optimised for track". This will the algorithm that the "brain" of the suit is running whilst in use. It's programmed differently due to the type of riding you do on track compared to street. IIRC it won't activate below 50km/h if you come off & will allow much greater lean angles (like MotoGP elbow scraping stuff). Whilst it is more expensive, it's got a nicer "feel" to it and the airbag tech is more polished with LED status lights & app control. Whilst it is more expensive, there is no subscription fee!

Oh, and to add another option in to the mix... have you looked at the Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 System? It can be worn with Tech-Air compatible garments or virtually any other brand of jacket/suit. As long as you have 4cm of space around the torso for it to expand into. Go for the Race system as you can swap it between Race & Street mode by plugging it into a computer for a few mins. It also means you have more options with what to wear as you could wear anything over the top of it. And if you do have a spill and trash the outer garment, the vest should still be ok to use afterwards.

Tech Air 5 is a road only air vest, the Tech Air Race is for trackdays and racing but needs to go in an Astar garment

Haha, yes to be fair I have had mixed experience with Dainese! I had the zip fail on a pair of boots I'd worn for nine months. Dainese refused to repair or replace because the boots were too worn!

Try them all on and see which fits the best.
From experience you’ll find a few may be a non-starter depending on body shape and that may make the decision for you.

Thanks dibblecorse, so:

Tech Air 5 = Road and wear under virtually anything

Tech Air Race = Trackdays/Racing with Astar Tech Air compatible garment. Can be switched between Race/Street algorithms. Oh, and it has 2 charges meaning it can be deployed twice before needing a recharge, unlike the Tech Air 5 which only has 1 charge.

I've decided not to get the RST suit. It would be a £900 punt and I think I'd rather go with something that is higher quality.

Seeing as though AM and Scott are only just down the road from me too I might have a word with them about a custom made suit.

Cheers thumbup

As I have AM and Scott on my doorstep I will be inclined to use them if/when I go the bespoke route.

I'm on a mission to lose a couple of stone at the minute, i started back in November and am about halfway to losing what I want to lose, so I think ill hold off for a couple of month now. I was considering buying an off the peg suit in the size I want to reach as a bit of an incentive to reach it, but I've realised that that is a bit daft now.

Decided to go for a custom AM suit.

I've been in touch with Steve and they are still open on an appointment basis for measuring etc... So I'll get myself over there in the next couple weeks.
