Tell you who deserves credit - the stunt riders! How the hell they managed to ride those bags of crap and wheelie them, slide them, go up and down stairs etc is amazing. I guess they tended to be based on stty old BMW’s? That’s what they look like to me

The rules for the use of motorcycles in film and television.

1) if a jump is required, modify a dirt bike so that in the dark, at a distance of 500 yards, through a soft focus lens, it looks vaguely like whatever road bike you were given to use in every other scene

2. if it's a 2-stroke, dub it with the sound of a 4-stroke, and vice-versa

3. if it's a Japanese 4, dub it with the sound of a Harley Davidson, and vice versa

4. if it's not a Harley or an inline four, just use whatever is first in the engine sounds library

5. when dubbing, ensure that the gearchanges and engine sound never match what is on the screen

6. no character may fasten a helmet strap

7. always record any chase at less than 30mph, with exaggerated lean angles, and speed it up in post-production

8. during the chase, the motorcycle should corner at the same speed as the car, while the car should accelerate at the same rate as the motorcycle, even though this is the exact opposite of real life

9. during the chase, no character, while driving an automobile or any other four-wheeled vehicle, should perform any of the many manoeuvres which would terminate the motorcycle's progress with extreme prejudice

10. if at all possible, select an actor who looks as if he was voted "least likely to be seen within 100 yards of a motorcycle" by his classmates

Im sure there are one or two more that escape me for the moment. smile

That reminds me of the Dirty Harry series of films, the one with the rogue motorcycles Cops dispensing justice directly, I think David Soul was their ringleader. The end features some chase of the motorcycle Cop baddies on the deck of an aircraft carrier, the bike that leaps off of the ramp into the harbour is a small to mid capacity Japanese twin, but was previously a police spec. Moto Guzzi or Harley.

Magnum Force

Moto Guzzi Eldorado.

IIRC, the jump bike was a Triumph Tiger 100.

Not to mention bikes clearly filmed on tarmac with road tyres, only to suddenly have ''knobblies'' and hurtle down some dirt tracks.

Torque is really bad for that!

You could well be correct. A couple of motorcycle forum have that bike down as a Triumph.

It was definitely a Triumph, but I'm not certain about the model. smile

The Internet says T100 or T120. Perhaps a more knowledgeable PHer could identify them? One of the Internet pages I looked mentioned doing kick starting wrong and that may be the clip:
