Hi all, haven’t ventured in here for quite a while. Hope everyone is keeping safe etc. The title says it all really. It’s for two motocross bikes (adult size for recreational purposes so not competing etc). Any pictures you have would be welcome any any advice on where to use them in the Essex area would also be welcome). Thanks in advance😬

Swab transit size, realistically. You can get them in smaller lower vans, eg lwb caddy’s etc, but it’s a pain in the arse.

In the 80s we strapped two bikes onto the back of a Daihatsu pickup, no problem. They were Super Dream size.

Just have consideration for where you use them. A local area had been trashed by Motocross bikes churning up the ground and paths and ruined it for everyone else. Surprising how much damage they do.

A Seat Alhambra/VW Sharan/Ford Galaxy would probably fit them

Thanks all for the replies. It turns out there’s somewhere 10 mins from where I live and didn’t realise it. Funny as I was looking at the options you guys have mentioned so I must be on the right track.

Realistically you are not going to want to go smaller than a Transit custom (swb L1H1). Remember as well it’s not just getting the bikes in, you will end up with a whole heap of gear/tools etc in there as well.

The other option is a two bike trailer. You wouldn’t need an SUV or similar as the tow vehicle as the overall tow weight would only be around 400kg or less. So pretty much any hatchback or similar would do.

I’ve a swb vivaro.
When I take my lad out, we have two bikes and all the gear, tools etc. couple of camping chairs as well. There isn’t a whole load of room left. When I move three bikes in it the gear doesn’t fit at all well and ends up piled on top of the bikes.

This would probably be my choice tbh. Get a big estate or people carrier with a towbar and one of those collapsible bike trailers.

^^ This,

I have an old W638 Vito (the original) panel van and it'll take 2 bikes AND all your gear, fuel cans, tool box(es) tyres, sarnies etc.

Why buy anything smaller?? it's just not worth the aggro and for what saving??

If you’re going for a van I’d buy a decent full sized one.

Fiat Ducato or similar.

I had one through work and it’s bloody handy for all sorts of things.

Removals (kid at uni moved every year) ,picking up flat pack furniture , skip runs
picking up sheets of ply/ plasterboard , paving slabs or diy materials in general.

I even used to take a couple of mopeds down to Peterborough when the show did the Moped Mayhem.

If you get a small sized van you’re limiting yourself. Get a big one you’ll wonder how you managed without it.

Doubtful, we had a Galaxy (old type with removable seats) and I managed to get my Son's Enduro bike in it but it was a struggle and I certainly wouldn't have got another alongside it.

Biggest problem was height, especially at the door opening.

I've seen guys either ratchet strap their suspension down or fit wheel barrow, wheels on the front to get around this.

The smaller vans are far more economical

The issue with trailers is they get stolen, lower speed limits, can't leave the bikes on them anywhere etc

I've seen someone put a 600 track bike in the back of a Mondeo estate with the seats down. Possible, but not a great idea.

I've seen a ZX10 inside a Fiesta..

He had to get up to 120mph to achieve it though.......

Seriously, track day bikes or offroaders, get a van if you don't have room/space for a trailer. Or look for a trailer that can be disassembled and packed away.

The other option is a pickup - better than a trailer, nicer to drive than a van but less practical really
