Getting a V5C for a bike thrown together from several bikes?
Discussion
Hi guys!
Friend of mine has a Kawasaki stunt bike. Being a stunt guy, he has had his fair share of accidents with it and in 2018 he smashed it so hard, the frame cracked. He jumped onto eBay and bought the same bike, high miler but with a solid frame, the donor bike so to speak, with the intention of transferring the bits over from his original bike to the donor frame / eBay bike.
Unfortunately he is not a very organised chap and not computer literate so has asked for my assistance. His original Kawasaki was white, the donor bike is green (same model, however). He does not have the V5C for the original, only for the donor bike.
Question is how does he now go about registering the rebuilt Kawasaki which consists of the chassis from the donor bike he bought off eBay with other parts from his original bike.
Both bikes are 2005 reg. I initially thought a Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval is what is called for, but that is for bikes under 10 years old from what I understand.
Any pointers would be appreciated!

The frame/chassis/monocoque is the vehicle's identity, so, luckily, he has the correct combination of frame and document.
If possible, I think I'd be inclined to do one thing at a time.
Colour change, then MOT, then tax, then engine number.
The rules for changing engines were modified a few years ago, and you need to provide documentation.

What evidence to give
You must give DVLA evidence or written confirmation if you make any of the following changes to your vehicle. Your V5C update will be rejected if you do not.
Change of engine number or cylinder capacity (cc)
You need to provide either:

You need to provide either:
- a receipt for the replacement engine
- written evidence from the manufacturer
- an inspection report provided for insurance purposes
- written confirmation on headed paper from a garage (if the change took place before you bought the vehicle)
First thing he needs to do is get a replacement V5 for his old bike.
That gives him the replacement engine number as belonging to him (even tho’ he already owns it) and how long he’s owned it. So you shouldn’t need a receipt for the engine although this may be something you’ll need to discuss on the phone with the DVLA.
A person might be better than ‘computer says no’
IME it's very much luck of the draw with the DVLA
Sometimes they put things through without question, sometimes they want a ridiculous amount of documentation at which point I don't bother.
My experience is mostly regarding swapping larger engines into cars where they start wittering on about CO2 etc which is irrelevant on the older cars I play with.
