I bought many Cat D cars when I was younger and enough had problems to deter me from buying another.

With bikes even a stationary drop can end up with them being recorded so I'm reconsidering

On sub £5k bikes if there is no visible evidence what would you expect the price difference to be compared to an identical , non recorded bike ?

I have bought a few over the years and they are generally at least 25% cheaper, they are difficult things to shift when you want to sell.

Yes, although a lot of that depends upon age and value.

Something relatively new and high end, absolute nightmare to flog with a recent marker against it; anyone looking to buy would be mad not to check a £15k 180mph bike and when you're spending that amount of dosh you will probably just walk away no matter how well it's been repaired.

A 10 year old £7I tourer that has a marker for cosmetic damage; yeah, healthy discount, dozens available, bargains to be had etc.

A 15 year old Bandit 650, no one even checks, no difference in price to all the others out there, buyer beware etc.

The reason I'm asking is one I have recently bought on eBay turns out to have been stolen 10 years ago, it was a cheap bike, there's not many about and it doesn't really bother me.

But obviously I'll have to sell it on at some stage and unlike the seller I would declare it - supposed to collect it today, we'll see what he has to say.

Most I've seen advertised don't seem to give a discount at all which surprised me

The current owner might not even know its history.

As I say to a lot of people (racist ranters mostly), do you even know who shagged your ma, let alone your granny?

I always smile when I see an advert for a 10 year old, five owner bike that says stuff like "never dropped / never seen rain / never wheelied / never thrashed" etc.

Just spoken to him so I could gauge his reaction, he clearly didn't know but turns out he owns a garage and bought it off one of his customers so should have known better.

Offered to knock £100 off and it is already cheap

I bought a cheap 600 SRAD privately some years ago which unknown to me , had been a damaged / repaired(cant remember the category but it wasnt the worst one)

I HPId it before buying , it showed clear then so I can only assume I bought it just before it was registered to the database.

The issue I had was that Swinton insurance then , part way through the policy, found out and voided my insurance..It was then difficult to insure .

From that experience, I would avoid any vehicle which is in any category, no matter what the cost.

Is it a £500 bike? If not I'd be tempted to walk away just to avoid the handle when you want to sell... Unless you don't plan on selling it and keeping it of course!

I bought it, it's a KTM Duke mint are worth £4k, average £3k+ and I bought this for £2100

I don't like having mint bikes as I like to be able to use them without constantly worrying about scratches/ corrosion - I'm sure some others must feel the same

Took it for a test ride yesterday, rides fine and did more miles than it's done in the last 3 years

I bought a bike from a salvage yard knowing it to have been written off. A crack in the fairing and a snapped clutch lever was all that it had been written off for.
Put some gaffer tape on the crack new clutch lever and had two great years out of it it never missed a beat came to sell it and somehow it didn't have a marker on it and nothing on the logbook told the new owner he wasn't fussed.
Got exactly what I paid for it two years earlier. Wish i'd kept it.
