Had a go at polishing a tatty old engine side cover today and seems to have gone ok so far it is about 80% done with a few different sanding machines .It seems hard though to get the perfect professional finish .Thinking now of asking a few local metal shops if they can finish it off

Find a man with a very dirty face to do it properly.

I've a 3hp I think bench polisher, which can take some force without stalling , as you need to heat the polish in order to get any affect with the mops.
Its a messy process, and whilst I've got a decent finish on parts of my bike, I had a previous speed triple frame done by a pro a long time ago, and the finish was much much better.

Yes in the past - it takes bloody ages and then shows everything else up - where do you stop ?

As above - take it to a pro they are so much faster, you'll be effectively working for 50p / hr

If it is an old engine, watch the oil temp after polishing, the smooth cases have less cooling surface.
