Have any of you guys ridden again after damaging the collar bone area? Ive somehow managed to damage all the muscles in that area and am wondering how or if i can get back to full fitness.

I don't know if it helps but I broke my collar bone quite badly in a crash and I was back riding and cycling within a month ...it was when I was a bit younger and bounced better.

Yep....fractured collar bone, arm, pelvis, skull, ribs, ankles, metatarsals in both feet.

Get your GP to refer you to a physio
do the exercises they tell you to
sometime in the future it will get better

bones usually heal in 6-8 weeks as an adult, muscles can take many months longer.

Luckily my employer is trying to refer me to a physio.

My ex brother in law broke his collar bone when he got knocked off his bike. A week later he was attacking the plaster with a saw so he could get his leathers on to go sidecar racing laugh

Broke both at various times in my life.

First one healed by itself with no problem apart from a lump in the bone.

Second one had to get plated and screwed as the ends were nowhere near each other. That one nagged me for years mostly because of the nerve damage after the op. Still feels funny sometimes when my clothing presses against it.

Both times I made the mistake of not using the arm soon enough which ended up limiting movement for months afterwards. Make sure you keep moving it as soon as you can.

Just like the above, I too left it a bit long to use my arm after breaking my collar bone and it took longer than it might to get back to full strength. However, no long lasting problems now other that superficial nerve damage from surgery that just means the skin feels a little odd to the touch in area.

The OP says it's muscles in the collar bone area which could be rotator cuff related, very different to actually breaking the clavicle.

Never heard of anyone being put in plaster for a broken collar bone before.

Ever.

No wonder he cut the plaster off...

I have a plate and 10 screws, needed keyhold Subacronial decompression surgery to cut shave some bone and remove bursa from the top of the humerus, and another surgery to remove part of my 1st rib to stop the main artery getting pinched by the metalwork.

Plenty of physio to get it all working well again, lots of time in the gym with weights. It is about 90% back to normal, a bit uncomfortable at times with a backpack (Kriega is great though). Importantly, no problems riding again.

It was a very long time ago. Probably late 80's. Definately plaster and definately collarbone. Covered part of his shoulder too. It was on the A38 just outside Worcester in front of a factory that made tin cans.
I can remember all that but I can't remember what I had for tea yesterday laugh

I broke a collarbone in a bike crash, along with a couple of cracked ribs. Collarbone healed quickly and I was fine after a month but the ribs gave me pain for a couple more months.

20 odd years on all is fine except for occasional aching in the collarbone area in cold weather etc. but I think that's more old age than anything... hehe

I broke mine falling off a bike about 30 years ago. The two bones knitted ok, but as a lap joint, so I've lost almost an inch of shoulder length. That mostly healed ok and then 20 years ago I high sided a moped and knocked a big chip off the same shoulder which took longer to heal. Unfortunately, despite following the physio instructions I ended up with an imbalance in my deltoid and that caused my shoulder to dislocate much easier than it should. Fortunately I then met a decent physio who gave me some exercises to properly correct things. Fifteen years on, its still the only part of me that I "need" to exercise. If I don't do the shoulder exercises occasionally I can feel the joint start to dislocate.

Broke mine last year learning to do the big jumps that the kids make look so easy at the bike park,I’m 52 and should know better.
Didn’t hurt that much when I did it, in fact got back on my bike to do it again but thought better of it when I found a crack running the length of my helmet.

Didn’t go to hospital till next day when the pain got to much.
Mine took a good three months to heal and stop giving me grief and I can honestly say I’ve never had pain like it. As it can’t be put in cast every little movement f****ing hurts like a mother ****er.

Eleven months on I have a dodgy looking lump on my shoulder and almost full range of movement.

As many above. Still have the titanium plate in there along with the self tappers. Rode again fine.

Physio is very important, but get a proper sports physio, not a namby pamby one. It’ll hurt like fk, but they’ll get you fixed, properly, the quickest.

If you’re in driving distance of J4 M3 I can make a recommendation. He’ll make you cry, but fix you properly and quickly. I was virtually immobile after damage to my shoulder, which then froze my whole back eventually. 2 visits and some screaming and I was fixed

Across the back of his neck and onto his shoulder iirc.

I've never heard of anything like that before for a collar bone.

There’s absolutely no way he’d be racing either as you can’t use your arm just a week later.
