Chain Oil / Grease - On / Off Road Bikes
Discussion
I know this gets argued about but are there any decent articles / tests on it ?
I saw the Fort9 one and have been using kerosene to clean my chains and gear oil to lube them but on my dirt bike they come back dry and rattly after a day out on my road bikes they are similar after a week
I tried a specific chain oil / light grease and after a day off road it was rattly but still oily although the oil / light grease was covered in dirt particles making a great abrasive which seems worse
I know the bike shops like the heavy grease but I think that's just to make an old chain look better

My off road bikes, I drop the chain off and I to an old roasting pan with paraffin. Good scrub with a small paint brush and hang up to dry. Then back on the bike with a light lube of general chain lube. This happens every 2nd ride.
My road bikes are cleaned in situ and relubed with Motul chain lube. I use specific chain brushes having 3 sides of bristles. Do a great job of cleaning up the chain..
