A short ride in the rain has revealed that my Gore tex jacket and RST sinaqua trousers aren't waterproof any more

TBH they have been washed in a machine at 40 which googling suggests may have been the problem

What's the best option now (other than buy new and to read the bloody labels in future)

Did you use the "proper" washing and re-proofing liquids?

Gore-Tex "likes" to be tumble dried. Might be worth giving that a go.

Get some Nikwax Tech wash and re-proofer and follow the intructions. If you have washed the jacket in a normal detergent that will be the issue. Run your machine at a high temp wash empty with no detergent to clean out before washing treating your jacket,

This is really important. You gave to make sure the powder tray is completely cleaned out. Normal powder / liquid fragrance will bond to the fibres in preference to the waterproofing. Then do a very hot cleaning cycle - good idea to throw a descale / cleaning powder through the washer.

The washer should be really clean before you water proof stuff... So it's worth doing other jackets / trousers at the same time as it's a right PITA cleaning out the machine.

Once done, a gentle tumble dry is good... If the garment allows.

Old detergent in the machine is usually why re-proofing doesn't work.

Don't know about Gore-Tex but I once washed my Richa motorcycle gear and when it rained, realised they were now sponges.

I reproofed with NikWax - damped them down and sprayed on the washing line. Once dry, they were waterproof again. £10 well spent.

When I was commuting a lot by bike, I found it worth reproofing the gear around once a year.

Typically, when heading into winter.

Missus was happy as the washing machine was cleaned and like another poster...do any and all gear, (walking cycling, etc) all at the same time.
