Helmet on plane hand luggage
Discussion
A search shows a few threads suggesting this is acceptable as the second item like a hand bag but those are old threads. Has anybody flown recently long haul with Virgin, KLM or Air India with a helmet in hand luggage in addition to a regular cabin bag ? Any hassle or had to pay extra ? I don't mind paying for a second bag, just like to know now not when I arrive.
Yes, I have tried ringing them but have you tried getting through to an airline recently ? It takes a very long time and the person you get through to seems to be an outsourced call handler who doesn't know anything but insists on reading a script that is a copy of what's on their website which doesn't help.

If it fits in the allotted size bag then you would think they should allow it?
That said, many years ago (long before the airline security ramp ups following 9/11) I took a pair of ski boots on as hand luggage and one of the cabin crew took the bag off me to put it in the hold, saying that I couldn't have something so hard/heavy in my hand baggage.

Flown from LHR and LGW with a helmet as hand luggage(in Helmet bag) and security didn't bat an eyelid, neither did BA who I was flying with.
And I have been working at European races where many drivers from the weekend have been on the same return flight, again all carrying their helmets onboard - doesn't seem to be an issue.

I've never understood this, alot of restaurants in airports also only allow plastic cutlery as well for 'Security' yet still serve you glass bottles and allow you to buy whopping big glass bottles in duty free and during the inflight service. Ryanair tweeted the following answer to the same question in 2015:

Virgin say yes for helmets under skiing here:

If say you should be ok.

I flew long haul Virgin a few years back as part of a charity bike ride with some 20 others. Some people put their lids in hold luggage which was not a problem. However, one member of the group was collared at the gate & told to put his lid in the hold as it was a 'weapon' & another bloke managed to get his lid into the plane only to be told by a stewardess to put it in the hold. Around 5 of us simply walked on the plane & put our lids in the overhead lockers. There wasn't much consistency!
If I did it again, I would probably avoid the hassle & wrap my lid in bubble-wrap & polystyrene & stick it in my suitcase.
