Hi.
I have held my UK licence (car/moped) since 1979. Just returned to UK after living abroad. Do I need a CBT to ride a motorbike here now and what size can I ride? My licence says A but I'm not sure if that means I can take my test on any sized bike or do I need to do a cbt/test on a smaller bike?
Many thanks, in advance.

You need to do a CBT which will allow you to ride a 125cc for two years. You can then do another CBT or take a full test.
At your age you may as well go direct access (DAS) which will allow you to ride any bike. You will have to do a theory test, even if you passed a car one before starting DAS.

Isn't A the full motorcycle licence?
Check the restriction column - very common is to have 79 (3) , meaning you can ride a trike, but not a bike.If you do not hold a full motorcycle licence you need to do a CBT before you can ride on the road on a 125 motorcycle.
You probably (but check) have an AM full licence, so you can ride a 50cc moped without CBT or L pates.
You can take you full licence test on any size bike you like. If you want to get an unrestricted licence the bike must be a minimum 595cc, at least 50kW and at least 175kg.

I think you can ride a 50cc on your car licence but don’t know if you need a cbt to do so.
Someone told me you don’t and you don’t need L plates either, but only for a moped / 50 cc. If you go 125 it is l plates and a cbt for sure.
you can ride a 50cc on your car licence without L plates, only if you passed your test before 1 February 2001 (Grandfather's rights).
