back on 2 wheels again - ZX10R
Discussion
Following a four year break I decided to get a bike again.I commute every day into London and I have to admit that the recent tube attacks were a large part of the reason (excuse as far as the wifes concerned!).
Anyway, I bought a new ZX10R and am running it in which is rather dull but a good way to get familiar with life on two wheels again.
I just wondered if anyone out there has a ZX10R and what they think of the bike and if there are any after market add ons that make it better?
Regards

only ridden 1 briefly, but its a good bike, wasnt sure about the brakes but this is very probably due to the standard pads so changing them is a cheap and good way to improve the bike, depending on how hard you start to ride it after running in i would advise a steering damper, and a tail tidy is the first essential add on to any bike as it makes the back end look so much nicer, after that if you want maybe get an aftermarket can, you have more than enough power there so i wouldnt go for a full system, by the way what colour did you get, they look amazing in black.
i changed the standard 1 on the R1 for a Matris damper for easier adjustability, but Ohlins,Matris, Bitubo,Scotts thier all good at thier job just get whichever you like the look of best, and well done for choosing black, not to knock Kwak but i think thier green doesnt look nearly as good.
I had a look on ebay and there are 2 companies that sell new ones--one looks better than the other so I went for that one- with p+p about£52
As for not needing a steering damper for commuting into London you're probably right but I do intend to go on a few track days and of course theres always the weekend!!

Are you guys real, leave it well alone apart from steering damper the zx10r pulls like a train from standstill.
yes it does but maybe he wants it to sound nice and look better too, i know i cant stand have the regular can on a bike its 1 of the first things i change, that and putting a damper and rearsets on it, i havent bothered with a damper on my 600 though it just doesnt need it as much.

the standard (factory) fuel map on the ZX10 and R1s are sh*te. Unless you've got about 8k+ on the clock, the fine tuning in the midrange is bollox - try riding one that's been mapped compared to one that's not been mapped.
Or did you read that it 'pulls like a train' in a magazine?

Until you ride a new R1 or similar new breed 1 litre bike then you won't know what the fueling is like. Having owned a new Blade and covered 10k miles on it and currently own a new R1 with 6k miles on that the fuelling from factory is not that good on both bikes. I have also ridden the GSXR 1000 K5 for a few hundred miles and that particular bike had fuelling problems until the dealer put the Yoshi box on it and altered the fuelling. So us guys are for real as there are problems with the fuelling on these bikes!

did you have the 1000cc Fireblade?, just wondering how you thought it stacked up against the R1 as im not too keen on my R1s handling i just dont feel confident on it but when im on my 600RR or when i had my 954 Fireblade i was very confident about chucking it right over, getting my knee down around roundabouts etc, perhaps i just dont get on with the R1, ive ridden the earlier ones 2000 model and the 2002 FI model and i was fine on them but on the 2004 one i just dont enjoy it and am considering swapping for a 2006 Fireblade when they come out.

I did have the CBR 1000 RR, fantastic bike and very easy to ride quick but not involving enough, plus I had a few problems with it and decided to chop it in for the R1, basically it was a deal I couldn't turn down.
When I picked up my R1 it had the Dunlop D218 tyres on it and it was as nervous as hell especially in the wet. I did about 500 miles on the Dunlops and changed to Pirelli Diablo Corsa's and the difference was totally unbelievable. In the wet the D218's felt like they were about to let go at any moment and even in the dry the bike felt very nervous. My Blade had Diablo Corsa's on it so I was used to the Pirelli. If you've got the D218's get rid of them and put some Diablo Corsa's on, they will transform the handling of the bike .
The R1 I think needs more weight over the front as it tends to be very fidgety or loose, if that's the right description, even though there is a steering damper there it's not damped enough. Admittedly I haven't played with the suspension settings but I will have them played with once I do a track day on it, hopefully in the next few weeks. I'm also thinking of possibly putting an Ohlins shock on the R1 early next year and getting the front end re-sprung and new oil as the bike would have probably done about 10,000 - 12,000 miles by then and the standard suspension will probably be on the way out. It's cheaper to spend £800 on suspension including getting it set up, than buying another bike. The only other things I would fit would be an Ohlins steering damper sited above the tank and a power commander to sort out the fueling.
Sorry if I have rambled on a bit but I think the R1 is a very good bike and can be a lot better with the suspension sorted.
Cheers,
Andy

oh i agree that its a good bike on the whole, the engine is lovely its my favourite part to it, i bought the bike a couple of months old and it had corsas on but they were low so i put pilot powers on, theyre my favourite tire overall, ive even had the suspension set up differently and i just dont get on with it like i did the Fireblade or my 600RR, or the earlier R1s or the ZX10R ive ridden briefly, im really unsure whats wrong but im going to sell it in the spring or maybe before and get either the 2006 Fireblade or ZX10R or maybe the R1 if i test ride it and like it alot better than the 2004 model.
