Go easy on me. I've only been riding for five months so every seasonal change is like Bambie (me) venturing out into the new world....

OK today's ride was 7-9 degrees.

Oxford Mondial Advance laminate jacket, a Montane Prism jacket underneath, Dainese leather pants, boots, decent leather gloves and grip/seat heaters on. Full fairing bike and circa 3 hours total out. A mix of tech B and back roads, motorway etc.

I've come back and I've needed a long bath to warm up throughout.

I can ride a mountain bike with a couple of thin layers in the same weather for hours. Of course that's exercising...

What am I wearing wrong? Kitwise what should I wear, jacket etc?

I'm guessing the jacket set up us not totally windproof as the Oxford was fantastic in summer...

Maybe a decent gilet over the top?

You're not wearing a car, that's your clothing fail right there hehe

Seriously though buy some heated under layers, they'll make a world of difference.

Layers, more the better. For me it's base layers top & bottom then tshirt, jumper, thermal inserts in jacket and trousers. Make sure vents are closed in lid & jacket.

Thermal underwear (long johns and long sleeve top) makes a huge difference. Then layer up T-shirt, fleece and a decent quality textile/gore-tex jacket and trousers with lining. I always wore Rukka but others are available. Then a fleece neck warmer. 2 pairs of socks if necessary under your boots. Gloves are very personal but wear them under your jacket so they don’t fill with water when it rains. And get some heated grips. I rode in all weathers for years like this and it kept me warm, being cold on a bike is horrible but it’s the U.K., not Alaska. Follow my advice and you’ll be toasty. Oh beware of untreated roads with snow and ice, it’s impossible to stay upright on.

Wow. 20yrs ago I started wearing icebreakers of various GSM. I still own a ultra thin one covered in holes. Could wake up call.

I went to sportsbikeshop the other day during a ride out, bought some baselayer trousers and a top, put them on then carried my ride. They made a huge difference.

I was a motorcycle courier in the 80s. 12 hour plus days, 5 to 6 days a week.

I got cold, I got wet, I crashed a lot but I carried on.

40 years later wearing the best gear, heated gloves, muffs, big screen and that silly fur lined skirt thing for my 300cc Vespa and I can only manage a half hour commute before freezing to death.

And to think I keep considering getting a big bike again. I'd never use it. I find 16c cold on a bike these days.

Icebreaker was bought out 10yrs ago. The stuff went from silky smooth on your skin to scratchy.

Effective layers that allow your body to breath are vital. Motolegends seem to build their business around this so watch their youtube videos, subscribe to their emails and go and see them.

M&S thermal underwear does the job fine. Machine washable and cheap.

Proper winter/wet weather gloves, and get a buff/neck sock and pull it right up as well as tucking the bottom in to good under layers/thermals.

Once you've got proper warm gear another thing is to take proper care of how you're putting it all on and lining it up. No point in getting a load of warm kit if you've gaps letting the cold air in.

I purchased some from the midl of lidl that do a great job and layer up with my rapha cycling gear. My favourite is a windstopping thermal gilet and I don't even have to duplicate the spend on motorcycle-specific gear.

There’s a big comparison review of base layers in the latest issue of Ride magazine.

The RST Windblock and Oxford ChillOut shared the top honours with 30/40 points to get the coveted Ride Recommended badge.

Hugo, since you're new to biking, a local IAM club will see you access skills, know how and chums in a jiffy. Apologies for the segue.

I was about to post a similar question. Top half is fine, but I only have single layer jeans for warm riding, I don’t ride in the rain but want to get out more in the winter. I was thinking baselayer under my jeans, and then a pair of waterproof over trousers to keep out the wind.

Either that or grab a cheap pair of trousers from Facebook

I suspect a large part of the problem is draughts. The gaps around the neck, waist, wrists and ankles need to be sealed either with multiple overlapping layers or, for the waist, a full zip. A wind proof neck tube is essential.

Only once you have a complete draught proof outer will your under layers be able to do their job properly.
