fireblade fuel problem?
Discussion
Hi guys,
Me and a mate went for a ride into wales today. we both filled up with petrol in telford and set off. around 110 miles later we put some more in.
only he had to put 4 full letres more in. this is nothing new on our recent trip abroad it was usualy arount 2 litres more than me.
The thing is whenever I rode behide him today I smealt petrol i think its coming out of friggin exhaust. I went a little light headed at one point I swear it was getting me high.
any ideas?
well it sounds like its running rich, if its a carbed model(pre 929/RRY) it may need the carbs sorting out, if its a 929,954 or 1000RR it could probably benifit from a power commander and mapping it to sort out the air/fuel mixture.

Has he noticed any loss of power? TBH, unless there's a definite symptom of it running rich then I'd be inclined to take it to a dealer so they can check the emissions and verify your diagnosis. It could be something as simple as a plug malfunctioning but I'd be loath the start swapping bits about without a positive diagnosis as it may be a natural tendency for that engine to overfuel at high revs.
I have one of these bikes and the range difference between ragging in in 1st to 3rd gear down the lanes (especially if your mate tends to take it all the way to the limiter) and riding down the road in the higher gears can be quite marked. At a sedate pace I've had the reserve light come on as late as 120 miles but when riding hard in the lower gears I've had it come on just after 90 miles.

it just seemed the easiest way to look into the fuel/air mixture on a computer, i dont know if you can plug anything into to just the ECU like when you do diagnostics on a car, im really baffled as to why it would be running so rich anyway if im honest here.
