KTM have released details of their new SMT, I’ve never ridden one of the original ones but they always seem to be held in high regard.

I can’t make my mind up on the looks but the bike itself intrigues me, from what I can make out it’s a mix between the 890 duke and adventure.

What are people’s thoughts? Have you owned/ridden an older SMT?
What kind of person owns one?

I've owned a few 990 SMT but I prefer the looks of the 990 SM which is what I currently ride - they are 99% the same

I'm on a few of the KTM / 990 groups and the general consensus is WTF ?

It had better ride a damn site better than it looks

IMO they are just a fun to ride, do it all bike - with the emphasis on fun, they'll happily commute, scratch and tour

MCN rated them highly but they weren't a great sales success

Here's my last one - not exactly pretty but far nicer to my eye than the new one

Oooooohhh........ I have a 690 SMC R. I almost bought a 990 SMT a few years back....
Anyway, new bike time is somewhere in the next 6 to 12 months - I hope this is available in the time-frame, because this has whetted my appetite!!!

Looks pretty heavy, ans launched to a fanfare, it’ll take several weeks for the KTM mega discounts to come out!
Secondhand hypermotard is where I’d be looking.

The dirt bike front guard is weird choice but they seem to leaning really hard on the "Supermoto"-ness of the thing.

Also FFS KTM, just stop with the teasing and stupid prototype campaign. Show the production version and say when it'll be released.

Will be interesting to see what the reviewers say in the next couple of weeks.

Not sure it’s got the right engine to be honest. I’ve ridden the 890 twin in the 890 adventure and whilst it’s good, it isn’t particularly exciting or characterful.

This bike built around the 690 single or the Duke R engine would be much more up my street.

It's not looking that great in pikes peak trim, so the stock ones are going to look a bit bland. Hopefully in husky trim it will look better.

I just hope this means they do a 1290 version, something to battle the Street fighter with

I was looking forward to seeing this but whoa, thats one ugly beggar. Can't see me chopping in my Hypermotard for that anytime soon, funnily enough in a way I'm quite relieved, makes it a non decision!

I know they don't want to cannibalise sales of the bigger bikes but that tank isn't big enough for anything with "touring" in the title. As with all modern large KTMs it seems designed to give small children nightmares.

Does it have the Adventure ball bag tanks but smaller?
