If all goes to plan I'll be allowed to join IAM without doing their test. I've never bothered with my car as price wise it wasn't worth it.

Does anyone have any experience of discount for motorbikes if you join IAM and can tick that box?

For info my insurance is £600 a year currently so hoping there is a decent saving to be had.

You can join the IAM but I would think that Cornmarket (who give insurance 'discounts' to IAM) would only offer a discount if you have passed one of the Advanced driver/rider courses.

I've found Cornmarket very helpful and competitive with my vehicles.... but I am an IAM National Observer.....

Sign up and do the course (either car or bike) and you'll certainly learn something!!

I'm assuming LG is joining with an "equivalent" qualification smile

My experience of Cornmarket for car was that they were initially not competitive compared to comparison sites and you ended up spending a long time on the phone with them trying to negotiate it down to match. I gave up on them in the end.

IAM membership is £47 year. So it's unlikely to be worth joining just to get a discount on insurance (unlikely to be more than 10%), unless your insurance is really expensive. There might be other reasons to join IAM, for example if you want to join an affiliated club & participate in their activities.

I'd look at joining with the equivalent course or however its worded. I've seen on all GoCompare etc that there is a box to tick if you have any extra qualifications.

I joined by taking an advanced test (passed). It made sod all difference to my insurance. I think age (and hence experience and driving record) counts for much more. It may be beneficial to a newly qualified, younger rider/driver, I guess.

Never known it to make a blind bit of difference to your insurance cost. My Uncle became a National Observer for them and that didn't make any difference either.

You can generally get a discount just by mentioning a few facebook groups.

Whether the course is worth it is an entirely different question.

I've passed IAM and RoSPA car tests. The only insurers that gave a discount for it were more expensive than others that didn't.

I may do one of them on the bike one day.

I passed my test as a spotty 17 year old in 1984. I passed my IAM in 1989.

I have never got any worthwhile insurance discount, but I will realise 40 years no claims in September 2024, all being well.

I decided to join after a quick chat with the local group at a Bike Safe course I helped with.

I liked the idea of joining people with a similar mindset to riding as me, rather than balls to the wall and almost dying every ride as I see on Facebook on other groups.

Looks like I bring the average age down by 30 years!

It makes fk all difference.

You can get discounts just from saying your a member of a Facebook group like 1kcc club.
