We all hanker back to the days of our youth, and back when I was 16 the parents put their foot down (mother mainly) and said - no motorbikes..or mopeds!

Role on too many years and I have had loads of big bikes but never a moped, and I mean a proper moped, with pedals!

Well many years go by and a certain friend mentioned over a beer he had bought a moped - for the exact reasons above. A total left field purchase for him as it is normally impulse buys such as Maserati's and Jags. But he is mechanically lacking and yours truly ends up getting involved fixing, or advising, on most of his faulty purchases. Well after looking it over I made the mistake of saying, 'if you want to get rid I will cover whatever you paid for it'. 8 months later and it is in my barn.

Here it is. 1990 KKM Mo-pet built in Ohio and came into the UK via a personal import. I have the NOVA. Not yet registered on the road in the UK.

Sachs 505/1A 47cc 2-stroke engine and cable brakes. A mainly US made Puch Maxi if you will. 680 miles on the clock and generally good condition bar frayed cables and a leaky carb.

After a couple of months of part time fettling - cables replaced, fuel tank flushed, new carb, re-packed bearings, new rubber and it is now running and stopping. Reached the heady heights of 25mph at the weekend followed by a Greta defying cloud of oily smoke wink

I go to a bike meet in Calne Wiltshire every year and it is a great day out.

One of the happiest bunch you can meet is a group of guys between 40 and 60 years old who all have mopeds of various types. They scoot along with a following whiff of 2 stroke smoke and just look to be having the best time of any out there.

There is a place for everything enjoy getting this on the road

Good stuff.

This was the classic (tiny) moped that I put back on the road and "tuned" a little a few years ago.

I sold it for 3 times what I had paid for it (when it was a non-runner and non-MOT)

Love the duct tape look o7

This will be getting some light mods. Front exh manifold has been swapped out to a 28mm OD. Carb coming off at the weekend and being bored out from 12 to 13mm. Jets also being upped a few stages. beer I may even see 30mph!

That's certainly different!

I remember going to Rykas at Box Hill a year or two ago and there was a group of old blokes, probably in their 60s, who had gone there on 4 or 5 FS1Es. Rather them than me, I only took my moped there for a year when I got something bigger, but they seemed happy enough.

I was going to say, I have two Solex and a Trojan Mini-motor which will do low twenties, so there should be more performance to come!

Will probably also improve with some riding.

Reminds me of a Puch Maxi my friends and I got when we were all around 14. It was an mot failure, so very cheap.

We used to ride it on lanes and a farmers field. We had a lot of fun trying to get it over 30 mph assisting the little engine by pedaling really fast.

We’ve still got a Peugeot 103. Had since new in 1993 and we all rode it until getting a car / bike licence.
Sadly it was abandoned outside for years.
I considered restoring it but money pit springs to mind and that it’s located at my family home in France and I’m in London!

Like that, but aren't the bars a bit slippy?

I was sorely tempted by something similar a few years ago (Jawa Babetta/Puch Maxi etc) but was pretty concerned how dodgy it would be on a main road, nevermind carrying my 6'1" 18 stone about.

This is the thing.

They were designed and built for skinny sixteen year olds.

I rode the single geared Garelli Katja above on the road a bit at 13stone. It wasn't very fast. With tuning it did 32mph on the flat and indicated 40mph downhill. Uphill... well, it was faster than walking.

Haha yeah, that was just after it'd had a bit of a revamp in covid lockdown. I pushed it to my dad's so he could tinker to stop him going mad with boredom.

He couldn't get it running (spares aren't easy to get any time let alone in the pandemic era!) so I went and collected it like that. He lives up the road from me so I went under cover of darkness on a really warm evening in shorts and teeshirt. I was pushing it back and as there was no traffic about I jumped on and scooted up to a decent speed on the path, then took to the road and freewheeled, knees and elbows tucked in with no helmet on down the middle of the road. Really eery but cool experience as it's usually a busy road!

Mopeds as the basis of projects appear to have become very expensive.
