I Know, I Know, you buy a Ducati you expect hassles!

My problem is my 99, 748 has a tendancy to miss 6th and pop into neutral. Bloody anoying when your ball's out and have to dump the clutch and kick it back in with a right klunk!

Any sudjestions? Am considering poping a slipper clutch on albiet not in the near future, would this affect it?

Other than that, i love the thing, ride it daily in all weathers and some long distances, can do a full tank on it but feel somewhat like a swiss army knife for some time after! :)

Try the simple stuff first. Drop the lever one spline (Or use the adjusters if it's like my old 888)to make sure it's easy to get a good gear selection.

When seated in your normal riding position the lever should precisely intersect the ball of your foot.

Absolutely agree with the above... my little tiny ballet feet didn't always make a positive gear change... I adjusted the lever to suit my foot position & that helped, along with getting the clutch lever adjusted so that was fully engaged at the time of the gear change... slipper clutch great but not just to resolve something like this!

they all do it if you dont engage the gear propper, I have been on several new bikes aswell as other italian bikes and it has been the same, you just need to put it in gear propperly. slipper clutch does not change this (well not on mine anyways)

I can also state ive never once had a problem with my ducati, ever, bought it from new.

this is only a issue if your being gentle with the gears. be assertive and push it into gear, it only happens on mine when I try to treat it nice and gently push it in, then sometimes it doesent go all the way and I have to try again.

Second this, adjust it till it's just right.

My 916 has a reverse shifter and it's just a lever with no linkage at all, much more positive and a slightly longer travel, (which also makes finding neutral easier), gear selection is never a problem but now, as when I got it with conventional shift, it is important to get the optimum position for both up and down shifts. If the lever is too high it makes it awkward to lift up and vice-versa if it's too low.
I found the original setup was never perfect as the lever was too close to the footpeg (big feet?) but now with rearsets and adjustable shifter I can get it spot on.

I have to say that IMHO Ducati gearboxes are the best I've experienced, indeed I don't know of anyone who's had gearbox problems, other problems yes but Gearbox
