I have two or three helmets all regular road ones .
I watch a couple of utube fellows who have helmets with peaks on them.
Adventure type helmets.

What are the peaks for what do they do

You can drop your head to help block the dirt being thrown up by other riders in front of you. IIRC that was the original reasoning for their use in MX.

Nowadays for the road riders it's fashion. They can block some sun at certain angles but it's not often that everything falls into place for that.
Those style helmets do tend to have larger openings to allow the use of MX goggles if the rider does actually go off road though, and many of them have other off road centred functions such as more removable ventilation channels for airflow, grooves to keep goggle straps in place and the like.

I always rode with a peak, I preferred the look, and it deflected quite a bit of rain.

Great for low sun especially in winter.
If you only ride on nice days in the summer, probably not much use.

For off-road, it does seem to keep errant twigs and brambles off your face/visor/goggles quite well.

Mainly for keeping the sun out of your eyes. They are a nightmare at motorway speeds though.

I just bought a Schuberth E2 (a C5 but with a peak basically), and only because it was a better price than the C5, fully expecting to take the peak off and never use it, but it’s quite useful in cutting down on sun glare, particularly as a glasses wearer (I find the drop down sun shade, whilst good quality means I’m looking through three layers of glass and that isn’t great).

I really don’t notice it dragging / turbulent at motorway speeds even with no fairing at all.

Mud off road and sun when it's low in the morning / evening

Some are horrific at speed / in cross winds others aren't bad at all sub 100

The drop down sun visors just don't work well for me

Really depends on the peak venting and the bike I suspect. I ran a AGV with a naked bike and had zero issues at all until I was around 100 at which point I had naked bike issues anyway
