I've not had bike insurance for some years and have no NCB for bikes. For cars I have a lot, but my insurer NFU doesn't do bikes anymore.

Go Compare is pointing me to Hastings at about £350/year for a 500 Fantic Caballero. I am not keen on Hastings however.

Are there any direct insurers or brokers that can be recommended?

TIA

I am not sure why Hastings are not for you but recommending an insurer is a bit like recommending a hospice. No quantity of fluffy characters or “extras” should deceive you into believing that they are on your side so I’m inclined to assume that they are all as bad as each other.
Coincidentally though, I am with Hastings and have just renewed. I had a claim last year which is nearing conclusion and it went as well as expected. Everything seems to be outsourced to third parties anyway at a practical level (recovery, collection, repairs and of course legals) so they really are just a shopfront. The only complaint I had is that I had to download the app as I was on the side of the road to get them engaged initially. That was tedious as my phone had offloaded the rarely used app (who uses it regularly enough for this to not happen?)

Anyway tl:dr - I would get the most cover for the least premium and tend to lean toward a brand I recognise.

Good luck and make sure it covers clothing with all that new kit as well.

I usually find https://www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk/ is better than Go Compare / Compare the Market etc.

That came back with Hastings again, but £60 more!

What's wrong with Hastings, never had an issue.

We had some issues with their car insurance. Caused us a lot of problems and we had to get quite tough with them.

Ah, shame, good to know though.

I've insured through them before, never claimed.

I was interested in their structure so looked them up - they are both a broker and an underwriter. The latter being a separate entity but vertically integrated in the company structure. I didn't know that. I'd assume then, that unlike other brokers who tout out to a board of different underwriters, Hastings only use their own underwriter.

No bearing on the question asked but thought it was interesting!

I was back to biking last year after a 17 year layoff... best quote I could get (comp) on the Ducati was over £2k. Garaged, outside the M25. weeping. I'm hoping that this year insurance will come down considerably... if I complete the year with no claim.

Bike sure, Adrian Flux by another name, were by far the cheapest when I passed my test at the fine age of 55. Less than £200 for a Yamaha FZ6, 6000 miles fully comp.

I think my first policy after a long lay off was with Bennett’s.

Tend to use Quidco’s own comparison section nowadays. Weighing up whether the cash back beats going direct. Sometimes the perks and/or excesses vary between results.

I’ve never claimed but I’ve always found Devitt decent to deal with for the usual stuff and they’ve been a good price on quite a few bikes for me over the years.

I’ve found Hastings to be at the lower end for general customer service and I avoid them now. Helps they haven’t been competitive for me but unless they were loads cheaper I’d go with anyone else.

I have always used Wicked Quotes - they have been really good in getting policies sorted but never made a claim. Full disclosure - I am between bikes at the moment and haven't used them since 2022.

That’s verging on self insurance. Blimey.
